Daal

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    Masoor Daal 1 cup
    Tomato 1
    Onion 1
    Red Chillies 2
    Turmeric pinch
    Salt to taste
    Bay Leaf 2-3
    Coriander powder 1/2 tsp.
    Chili powder 1/4 tsp.

Directions:

[1] Cook Daal in 3 cups water.  Bring to boil and remove foam.

[2] Add bay leaves, turmeric, and a few drops of oil, and con-tinue to boil.

[3] Mash mixture.

[4] Add tomato and salt, and heat for a couple of minutes more.

[5] Fry onion, red chillies, coriander and chili powders, and add to daal.

This is a great recipe.  I added a pinch of black mustard seeds and some fresh garlic (which I wouldn't add next time) but on the whole, this recipe gets my vote for authentic Indian cuisine:0)

Recipe works with any legume. I used red beans and added cream just before serving. Very good.

Hey.  I make daal with yogurt, too.  You can put it in after the onions and such. Then simmer for a couple of minutes.  Makes a nice addition, I think...

I would like to know what Daal is, and where can I find it.

Daal is lentils. ;o)

This was pretty good. But the recipe wasn't very clear; I didn't know how smallthe tomato and onion was supposed to be chopped, or how long to boil the lentils. And the daal stuck to the pot.
