Sambal Oelek (hot chili and lime sauce)

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1/2 cup finely chopped fresh hot chilies
    2 tablespoon fresh lime juice
    1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon finely grated fresh lime peel

Directions:

Combine everything but the lime peel in a blender and blend at high speed for 10-15 seconds. Scrape down sides of blender and continue blending until the chilies are completely smushe'd up. Transfer into a bowl and add lime peel. Refrigerate until ready to use in nasi or urah.

Serves: about 1/2  cup

Can anyone tell me where I can find sambal oelek?  I have looked all over the place around my area.  No one has ever heard of it.  My diet that I'm on for gallbladder problems (The Liver Cleansing Diet by Dr. Cabot) calls for sambal oelek.  You can e-mail me direct at Ysrlsue@aol.com Thanks!  Susie

Susie, i live in sambal heaven (amsterdam).  colonial times brought us over 80 varieties, sambal badjak perhaps the best.  being almost a daily part of my diet, i travel with a jar or two.  howe'ver, next to impossible to find in usa.  conimex (part of evil unilever) has a brand there, and it is lousy.  follow the recipe, maybe adding a dash of un-refined sugar...or buy koningsvogel brand mailorder from www.hollandsbest.com

Susie,  if you want the red paste version try looking in Asian food markets.  I buy Huy Fong Foods  brand at my local grocer in the  Oriental Section  it comes from Rosemead CA and has a website www.huyfong.com  on the jar.  Hope this is helpful.

holy crap.. omg.. yeah.. this should be called HOT DEATH SPICY EXTRA SPICY BURN YOUR EYES OUT chili lime sauce.. maybe its the chilis i used.. but jesus christ.. i opened the blender to smell it (heheheh) and couldnt stop coughing from the spicy fumes for like 5 mins.. but damn does this stuff taste good!

i really wanted to try and replicate the ingredients of sriracha, so i added a clove of garlic, a sprinkle of sugar and a splash of white vinegar.. this stuff is delicious.. not by itself of course, but its a fantastic way to store your fresh chilis.. i used thai birds eye chilis btw

the spice is the life  Evil

I love hot and spicy, so would like to make this, but I have absolutely no idea what to use this for.  Any ideas?
