Philly Cheese Steaks

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1-2 tablespoons soy margarine
    1/2 small onion thinly sliced
    6 oz (or about 1 1/2 cups) burger-style crumbles
    garlic powder
    4 slices veggie/soy mozzarella
    2 hoagie buns/sub rolls
    vegan marinara sauce

Directions:

Cook the onion in the vegan margarine until soft and translucent. Add the crumbles and cook until heated through -sprinkle with garlic powder (or minced fresh garlic) to taste

Lower heat and spread mixture out in pan - top with slices of vegan cheese. When vegan cheese is melted, pile into 2 rolls and top with warmed marinara sauce.

Variation: You could also saute some green pepper along with the onion.

Serves: 2

Preparation time: 20 minutes

I'm from Philly. And even though I'm vegan, I'm still really critical of cheesesteaks (so's the rest of Philly!). And this ... is ... SO GOOD! I had never put garlic powder on my cheesesteak before, but it reeeeeally added that extra kick. I didn' t use the sauce, though, that's not Philly. And I used Morning Star Crumbles. Mmmmmm, love it!

I think they mean "burger-style crumbles" and "garlic powder" Smiley

This is an amazing recipe!  Anyone who needs that 'meat' fix will truly love it.  I didn't use the sauce either, but instead added a little Annie's Worcestershire sauce to the burger crumbles while cooking along with some diced green peppers.  Excellent! Smiley

I skipped the marinara sauce, used sauteed onions, bell peppers and mushrooms, and used a different meat sub.  I didn't have any burger crumbles, but I had tofurky sandwich slices, so I used those.  I made a cup of unbeef broth, and then let the tofurky slices simmer in the broth for a bit, until it was hot and juicy. Then I layered the meat and veggies on the sub rolls, which I'd let sit in the oven with the cheese (since Tofutti slices take a bit to melt) to get toasted and warm.  These came out excellent.   Thumbs Up

These were good, kinda like a cheeseburger sub recipe I use. The marinara was an interesting twist though!
