Yummy Tofu Jerky

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
    3 tablespoon liquid smoke
    1/8 cup water
    1 tablespoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 clove garlic (crushed)
    1 tablespoon black pepper
    1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 lb. brick extra firm tofu

Directions:

Drain liquid off tofu and sqeeze as much water out of it as you can. I place paper towels or clean dish towels on the tofu and push down on the brick for a while.

Slice Tofu about 4 mm thick. You want long thin strips. Mix all ingredients except for tofu.  Marinate tofu in this mixture for about about 2 hours (this is not set in stone...you can do it for shorter or longer and it will still work).  Periodically, move tofu around in mixture to be sure all tofu gets marinated.

Place tofu into dehydrator for about 8 hours or until tofu becomes dark brown and jerky-looking :-)

If you think it is too salty, decrease the soy sauce and increase the water. You can also decrease the smoke if you think it is too smoky. Next time I make it I plan to add a bit of cayenne pepper for extra heat.

Yum!  Brook

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 8 hours

I made some tofu that tasted like jerky on accident. I used 4 tbs. soy sauce,3tbs. sugar, a dash 1/4 tsp. of cumin, 1/2 tsp. coarse ground pepper, 1 tbs. and Kahlua. The kahlua really brought out the jerky flavor. I never thought of using the dehydrator for tofu, such a great idea, thank you so much, my family eats jerky in front of me all the time :

theres another recipe for this on here, and they said 200 F, but someone else said 100F-120F for overnight/8 hours. i guess you could try both..even if it doesnt work, you'll have something like vegan bacon, which is pretty tasty Smiley

This stuff is great!  I suggest it to anyone who was a former beef jerky lover!

This turned out pretty damned good Smiley
I really looks like meat jerky and even has a similar texture. Chewy but not too chewy.

I only did 1/2T of black pepper and substituted 1&1/2T Braggs + 1/2T water for soy sauce. I also added 1/2t cayenne &  1t worchesterchire.

Oh, and one more thing, I baked mine at 170 for 3 1/2 hours and it turned out just fine. Who needs a dehydrator? Not me.

This was so easy to do, and it turned out great! I am used to paying $1.25 per stick of jerky at my local health food store, so I am delighted that I can make it at home for a fraction of the price and it taste just as good...actually BETTER! The only thing I changed was I didn't have any liquid smoke, so I substituted with Braggs. Oh yeah, and I just put mine in the oven overnight on "warm" with the door cracked.
