Mock Tuna Salad

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 - 15oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2T. soy vegan mayonnaise or pureed silken tofu
    1T. sweet pickle relish
    2t. spicy brown mustard
    salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In small bowl, mash chickpeas.  Add soy mayonnaise or silken tofu, pickle relish, mustard, salt and pepper and mix well.  This is wonderful in a whole-wheat pita with sprouts and some chopped tomato!

Makes 4 servings, Preparation time: 5 minutes

this was SO GOOD!  I was pretty skeptical because I don't particularily care for chick peas, but this was great!  I also added onions and lemon juice, because that is how I used to make tuna salad.  I had it on toast with lettuce.  Enjoy!

WOW! I was also really skeptical of this recipe, but it was great! I even used silken tofu, and it had the same mayo consistency. The beans kind of taste like tuna too. The only thing that was different from actual tuna was the stickiness of the meat. I HIGHLY recommend this.

Abosolutely fantastic, I used to enjoy tuna salad quite a bit before going vegetarian, and I was skeptical of how well this would measure up, but it did the job quite nicely!

I don't really think this is like tuna salad, but delish none the less!

I live off of this stuff!  I add about 1/4 tsp. kelp powder to mine, to give it that ocean-y taste

Wow, very good.  My boyfriend actually came in and tried it and was horribly confused as to why I was eating tuna, heh.  I just had it last night and am already considering it for lunch... cheap and easy, my kind of meal. =)

We thought this was ok. It wasn't fantastic or super tasty, but it certainly wasn't bad. If I made it again, I would experiment with different spices to give it a kick.

For those looking for additional spices to add, curry powder is a great addition.  Theres another recipe on this site similar to this one, but curry powder is used, also.  I like the flavor the curry gives for another variation.

This was REALLY good. I often have strange cravings for Tuna sandwiches, and this hit the spot!

If you're wary of the chickpeas, I make this with Great Northern Beans and its delish. (I use the recipe from one of the old Bobbie Hinman books)  Even without the mustard it made a tasty and nourishing sandwich spread.

I enjoy this stuff very much! I'm not a vegan- but I gave up tuna long ago, as it was not tasting right and has lots of mercury- so this stuff really fills the void. I find its best when not chilled- but room temperature. Put it on whole-wheat toast.....and Mmmmmm!

This works out really well!  I put in olives or dill pickles instead of the relish, and yellow mustard instead of brown.  It really does taste a bit tuna-like.

Very nice and easy.  For a more oceanic taste, try replacing mustard with Annies Naturals Sea Veggies & Sesame Dressing.  Its not as easily found as the other Annies dressings, but worth searching around for.  I get it at my local Whole Foods.

Hey everyone! this sounds kinda bad....does it taste good. I used to looooovvveee tuna, but not with pickles Sad or mustard Sad. ANy sugestions?

Archived comment by: toiti
Ok, this is fantastic! My children love it! I brought some for lunch today, LOL! I added some kelp granules like another comment said, and it added to the sea-like taste. Great easy recipe!

Archived comment by: blufaerie
Toiti - try it with some diced celery and/or onion. Its really good. When you mash the chickpeas, leave them a little chunky to get the right texture. It looks just like tuna but does not really taste like it.

I read all of these comments and figured I'd go ahead and give this one a try. YUM! I liked it so much, I created an account here at VegWeb just so I could post how much I liked it. It was awesome! I've made it twice in a week... I took the below suggestion and added 1/2 tsp kelp powder, and also added a touch of tahini for fun. Regular pickles and mustard works great, this recipe is highly recommended! Also tastes great as a dollop in the middle of a lettuce leaf--great party food. Also works well as middle-of-the-night comfort food. MMM!

I tried making this yesterday and I couldnt believe how it came out! I smashed the chickpeas and added veganaise, sweet pickels, pepperchinies and onions. It was awesome! It really surprised me. I think this taste like tuna more than I expected. I really recommend this!

Last night I made a variant Weight Watchers Core friendly version of hummus in which the ingrediants were basically 2 cups of chickpeas and a can of artichoke hearts (in water, drained) and plain soy yogurt. What surprised me is that the consistency is very tuna like and with the right spices, it could very well serve as vegan tuna salad.

This was v. good - been veggie 10 years now but can remember texture of tuna and this was very similar! Really enjoyed it, think will try and make "fish" cakes with this and potato, somehow! Thanks for posting - i love chick peas and had never thought of using them in this way! Ta.

This mock tuna salad is stellar! Thank you for the recipe. I doubled it easily to make enough for lots of leftovers. I added celery salt and that Annie's Sea Veggies dressing -- it was great!

I added some onions and green pepper and want to put in some celery if I can find some. I added lemon juice powder (unsweetened lemon Kool-Aid)and dill and served it in a pita with (I like to put seeds or potato chips in for a little crunch!) The girls at work just went crazy for it and said it tasted BETTER than tuna fish! They were surprised at how good it was (they think vegans just eat twigs and dirt I guess!) My sister begged me to make it for her Bridal Shower and Everyone who tries it insists I give them the recipe. The lemon powder and dill are ESSENTIAL, though Wink! Now I'm craving it again! Too bad I left it at work! Cry One can of chickpeas (15 oz I think) makes 2 full pitas plus a tad extra. Tongue I never use the kelp, too fishy! Lips Sealed

Look NO FURTHER for a tuna sandwich recipe!!! This stuff rocks Cheesy MMMMMM. I also think it doesnt need the salt and pepper but I threw those in anyway just for comparison Smiley Yum!!

Also, I used regular Vegenaise - I've cooked with/eaten etc pureed tofu and I would not recommend using that to replace the vegan mayo unless you want a tofu sandwich! The veg. mayo does the trick, and is def. worth trying out if you can get your hands on it Smiley And I hated mayo as an omni, except for blts!

Very Good  :)I used to buy tuno for the kids but it was discontinued. I have been looking for a recipe to make "tuna". I changed the recipe some I used vegan mayo, but used regular mustard, lemon pepper seasoning with garlic and onion and dill relish.I showed the boys how to make it so they can have after schools snacks. Thanks Again!

I made this to put in my kids' lunches and it never made it!  I LOVE THIS STUFF!  It is inexpensive and very easy to make.  I put it on vegan crackers and snarfed it all down.

I had some powdered kombu and I added that, but my mistake the first time I did it was use to unsalted canned beans.  I made sure to use salted canned beans the next time and it was fab.  The kombu?  I can take it or leave it, but the rest is ohhh so good.

This is absolutely heavenly.  Best sandwich ever: much tastier than the "authentic" versions of similar salads-- tuna or egg-- and more pleasing in texture, too.

I've made a version of this infrequently for years.  I use chopped dill pickles instead of sweet, add finely diced celery and onion, and use nutritional yeast and lemon juice rather than mustard (this reasonably approximates my mom's tuna salad).

This was a "me" thing when my partner was out of the house.  I don't know why, but I had thought he would react to this with skepticism (as he often did with real tuna salad and egg salad).  He raved about how good it was for two hours yesterday after eating two huge sandwiches of the stuff!  "Why haven't we been eating more of this?  This is sooo good!"

Huh, how about that... I guess I get to make it more often!   Cheesy

This wasn't quite like tuna salad (at all) to me.
And expecting it to be, the first couple bites were very disappointing... but after that, I realized that I really did like it. :-)  Probably won't be something I make frequently, but it is good enough. :-)

Wow this is so good!  It really does taste like tuna salad!  I have never heard of kelp powder before, I'll have to try that out next time.  Thanks for the recipe, it's fast, easy, cheap and delicious!
