Easy Stroganoff

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 tablespoon vegetable oil or margarine
    1 medium sweet onion
1/2 cup vegetable broth or 1/2 cup water and 2 vegetable bouillon cubes
6 ounces textured soy protein crumbles (I used burger-style crumbles)
1 4-oz. can of sliced mushrooms, drained
onion and/or garlic salt to taste
    pepper to taste
    1/2 - 1 cup tofu sour cream
2 cups cooked rice or pasta

Directions:

Heat oil or margarine in a large skillet over medium heat.  Slice onion into small, thin slices and saute in oil or margarine until soft.  Add broth, textured soy protein crumbles, and mushrooms, and sprinkle with onion and/or garlic salt and pepper to taste. Add tofu sour cream and stir until heated through.  Serve hot over cooked rice or pasta.

Serves: 4-6

Preparation time: 20-25 min.

I made this dish and every one loved it! thanks and please keep those savory vegan recipes coming!

Great Recipe!  I want to let all you Bay Area (CA) veggies know that you can buy textured soy protein in bulk for around 1.50/lb at any Whole Foods store.  (I had a hard time finding it, so I thought I'd pass it on.) Thanks!

Really good!  My boyfriend did not believe that there was no meat in it!

this is a great recipe.  its similar to one ive used before.  i added sundried tomato, green bell pepper, and 1/4 cup vegan white wine.

Really yummy and easy, I added a can of corn which was nice (I'd actually read the sweet onion as being sweet corn and didn't realise till afterwards).  My son thinks it is just like real meat - it is also nice cold on toast the next day!

This stroganoff recipe sat very well. Its best made with stips of soy protein imported from Taiwan  that I bought from the Asian food market.  Last week I tried a different stoganoff recipe with morningstar crumbles, and my mom and I were in cramps for two days.Sorry Morningstar.

Awesome recipe!  I didn't have problems with the morningstar crumbles, they seemed to work well for me, easy to measure, too.  Thanks!!

this is one meal that i have missed!  5 stars!  my meat eating hubby loves it also.  he requests it often!  thanks

to Greengal et al, I think Morningstars products all have dairy in them, so that might explain your reaction!  If you are/were lactose intolerant and suddenly ingested some after a long time, it would cause pain, cramping and all sorts of tummy trouble.  Next time use Lightlife Smartground or other brand.

i just made this, and its totally awesome. i used multi colour veggie rotini and substituted milk (i am hare krisna, not vegan, i eat a little milk stuff) for the veg broth (cause im broke and didn't have none left). it was GREAT, my boyfriend loved it, reminded us of food our mommies made. next time i will use the broth and pour it over rice, and make sure to add PAPRIKA!! A+

This was very good. I used fresh mushrooms and garlic. It seemed to be just a tiny bit bland, so I added a tbsp of low sodium tamari soy sauce. Yum!

This stroganoff was amazing!  Cheesy  Best stroganoff I have ever had vegan or not. I made it one night then the next night had some friends over and made it again and then my boyfriend begged me to make it again the following day.  Very easy; seems easier then I remember hamburger helper.  I did have some changes though:

Used 1 1/2c water (to make it more saucy)
1 c TVP  (only enough for one serving if any less)
same amount of bouillon cubes
dash of soy sauce like others said
4 cloves garlic
LOTS of fresh mushrooms
so far found macaroni noodles are the best with it but still in search for better.

THANK YOU this will be a recipe used a lot and especially for back up if needing to make a quick meal!

This was really good! Here's what I did:
- The 1/2 cup of vegetable broth
- Reserved the liquid from the canned mushrooms, since people mentioned having to add liquid, used a few tablespoons towards the end
- Almost the full 1 cup of tofutti sour cream (I started out with 1/2c. and added more to taste)
- Added 1/8 tsp. of nutmeg (trust me on this)
- Pinch of dill weed and paprika each
- Splash of soy sauce (less than 1/2 tbs.)
- Four minced cloves of garlic, sauteed with the onion
- Lots of salt and pepper

I misread the directions about the textured soy crumbles, so there was a lot more TSP/TVP chunks than desired, unfortunately. I started to pick out noodles but I stopped so that I wouldn't just have soggy TVP leftovers. Rotini noodles were PERFECT in this, next time I'll make this with more noodles. (6-8 oz)

thank you!

Wow, I have to make this. It's been years since I made the Hamburger Helper Stroganoff and this sounds like it but way better.
