Easy Apple Crisp (margarine free!)

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

5 cups of thinly sliced apples
    3/4 cup sugar
    3/4 cup whole wheat flour
    3/4 cup rolled oats
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    1/3 cup oil
    1 tablespoon rice/soy milk

Directions:

I try to use vegan margarine as little as possible when I cook, so finally decided to create a vegan margarine free apple crisp recipe; since I love this desert so much. I hope you enjoy this!

Heat over at 375 degrees.

Boil apples in water for 2 minutes to soften them up.  Strain and place at the bottom of a square cooking dish,

Mix remaining ingredients until you get a flaky texture (if too moist, add a little bit more flour and mix well).  Sprinkle over the apples and even out with a spoon.

Place dish in oven and cook for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool before eating.

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 35 minutes

This is excellent. The third time I made it, I substituted natural applesauce for the oil to cut calories and add moisture to the layer of crisp.

This was such a simple and easy way to make apple crisp! We had a ton of apples from the apple tree, so I decided to use this recipe because it didn't have any butter/margarine like the others do. I boiled the apples for two minutes, but they seemed too soft, so I added another apple.

I just tried a bite, and it is soooo good!!!! I definately recommend this recipe to anyone! 5 STARS!

This was awesomely delicious!

I was at my sister's house for her birthday, and she wanted some apple crisp for a birthday breakfast...

we had 5 apples and no margerine! what could we do?

We made this!  We didn't actually boil the apples, we used Washington-Soft Galas and they were soft enough. We baked it for 30 minutes, and then 5 more, but there wasn't really any color to the topping... so we broiled it (for 3 minutes)... too long!  It burned (and set off the smoke alarm, at 7am...) BUT we scraped off the burned pieces and ate it.  It was soooo good (even after burning and scraping). I'd show a picture, but there's really not much left, only a few crumbs...

I just made this recipe again and it turned out great!! I used alot of apples (I'm not too sure how many, but alot!), 3/4 c. organic brown sugar, 3/4 c. oatmeal, 1/2 c. whole wheat flour, and 1/4 c. wheat bran, along with some cinnamon. And I added some applesauce inplace of the oil in the topping.  Turned out wonderful, and the longest part was just cutting up the apples. Very easy.

I hope you all enjoy it!

this recipe is great for breakfast!  I made it with applesauce instead of oil.  I think boiling the apples first is completely unnecessary - 30 minutes in the oven is plenty.  when I had all the apples sliced, I added a mixture of about 2 T. flour, 2 T. sugar, and some cinnamon to them.  it makes a nice sauce when it bakes.  5 stars!

This came out good but I think I will try spicing the apples first. The crisp was really yummy, but the apples were kinda bland. Still, Excellent recipe!

Because this looks so good I am contemplating whether I should make this for thanksgiving!  Can you use this crisp topping for pumpkins?

This is a winner!
Ran out of apples, so used blueberries, and it worked great.

i just made this--it's great! i did add a tiny bit of earth balance to the very top, so that it would crisp up a little more. next time, i think i'll sub applesauce for half of the oil. overall, it was very tasty. thanks!

As if this needs another 5-star review Wink But I'm telling you it ROCKS. If you use a harder apple like granny smith it really IS important to cook them a bit first, which I didn't because I failed to note the difference from soft Mackintoshes. But it was still amazing. Used a lot less oil in the crumble, and it  still had perfect crunchy- crumbly- sweetness. My mom used to make this with margerine every Christmas and since going vegan that's been a problem... not anymore! Thank you sooo much! Smiley

This is a great basic recipe to build upon, I made it and it turned out delicious!  Here are my variations:
I added a little cinnamon sucanat & a tiny pinch of salt and flour to the apples prior to putting the topping on.  Then I added another small pinch of salt to the dry ingredients and I used 1/2 applesauce 1/2 oil for the total 1/3 C of Oil.  I also didn't need to add the Tbsp of rice milk since it seemed wet enough.  Oh and I used spelt flour, I also didn't cook the apples first but I was using softer apples and they turned out just right after about 40 minutes at 350.
