BBQ Tofu Cubes

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 box of firm tofu; drained
    2/3 cup vegan BBQ sauce
    1/2 cup water
2 tablespoon soy sauce (low sodium)
    Louisiana hot sauce: to taste
    1 tablespoon sugar
    1 tablespoon oil

Directions:

Dice tofu into cubes about the size of vegan sugar cubes. Heat oil in frying pan and add tofu. Saute on medium until the tofu starts to turn a light golden color.

Meanwhile, combine the rest of the ingredients, and heat them in the microwave for one minute. Stir this sauce and add it to the tofu.

Continue to cook on medium until the sauce has gotten very thick.

This will make 2 adult servings,(4 side dish servings). Very popular with toddlers!

Serves: 2 to 4

Preparation time: 30 minutes

All I can say about this recipe is yUm, hehe.  Thanks alot Smiley it was great. Smiley

Why is it that everytime I bake or fry tofu- it tastes and feels like it hasn't been cooked at all?  I didn't freeze the tofu, but drained it. Am I missing something here? Please help!  ~ Jenn Minnesota Foxyfavre@lycos.com

I also recommend adding lots of cilantro (herb) to be cooked very lightly when the tofu is almost done. It adds a great taste. This recipe and my modifications have been favorites among even my meat-eating friends!

yea, this was amazing.  i added some spiricha instead of the louisana hot sauce.  amazing.

yeah, I hafta go with foxyfavre - I'm having trouble getting my tofu to have taste, and the consistancy is... unnerving, even though I'm using the extra firm - any tips? I'm trying to incorporate soy into my diet, but the icky factor is making it really tough - all help/advice appreciated, toolbox20@hotmail.com

TOFU Troubles:  It could be that you are using the extra firm SILKEN variety. Be sure your package doesn't say SILKEN. My favorite is Nasoya in the refrigerated section. Be sure to press and drain for 20 min. or so and I always marinate in soy sauce even when the recipe doesn't call for it. Sometimes it takes 15 or so min. on each side for it to brown. Just be patient and it will be great!

Delicious!  This was soooo good, I want more! A few minutes after adding the sauce to the tofu I threw in some whole mushrooms. A few minutes after that I added a bunch of Al Dente cooked asparagus, and served it over wild rice when it was all done. It was FABULOUS.  The kids loved it too (7, 3 and 2.) (I did omit the hot sauce for their sake) I'll be making this all the time! Thank you!!

For a good Louisana hotsauce I'd recoment Panola Gourmet pepper sauce.  It's great on taste and has a less vinegary taste than some of the other brands.  Also Sriracha is great stuff too

mm. I just made this and am still eating it. it made plenty. I got the Nasoya Extra Firm tofu and accidentally got the cubed, but it worked out great because the cubes were the perfect size. I put a little soy sauce on the tofu prior to cooking, and ended up letting it cook in a nonstick pan for quite a while. (I was afraid of ending up with the wrong texture) I also steamed some broccoli and added it in a little while after I added the sauce. Also I added sesame seeds. it would be delicious on top of some rice, but I didn't think of that til later! very very good!!

Mmmm...tasty. I made 1.5 times the amount of sauce and added a full bag of frozen stir-fry vegetables (I stir-fried it in the pan for a couple minutes before adding the sauce). Then I served it over couscous. It made about 2 large servings. I used chicken wing sauce instead of hot sauce, and liquid aminos instead of soy sauce. I even made a mistake and added too much sugar, but it was still good, although slightly sweet. I'll definitely be making this again. Thanks!

I am a recent vegetarian convert and this recipe will make the transition much easier!
SO GOOD!
I varied mine by adding broccoli and grilled pineapple, all served over rice. A definite keeper!

Yes, barbeque sauce is quite sweet. My fave is Sweet Baby Ray's; it is sweet, but very tasty! I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a barbeque sauce that isn't sweet, since it is pretty much part of the deal. :-) This recipe is great though, so if you want to try it out, you might want to use the hot sauce or something similar to balance it out.

YUMMO!!! I finally bought some tofu today...I was a lil intimidated by it, but I keep seeing sooo many delicious recipes that I want to try, so I bit the bullet...I did a quick marinade of balsamic vinegar and soy sauce...sauteed the tofu in a lil oil with some sliced onions...I just mixed some bbq sauce with water (didn't add any sugar), poured the sauce over the tofu and let it thicken...WOW...my mom wanted to try it---she ate it straight out of the pan!! She loved it---she said it tasted too sweet for her, so I'm happy I didn't add the sugar...I will definitely be making this again in the near future... Tongue

This was sooo yummy!  I didn't have Louisiana Hot Sauce so I used Cholula.  I have a 9 month old son and he loved this too.  It was prefect for him to pick up and feed himself.  In fact he liked it so much that when he was done eating he kept crawling over to me to eat my portion of tofu.  It was funny but it goes to show how good this recipe is.  Thank you for posting!!

This is now our favorite recipe (out of a lot of recipes!). It came out absolutely perfect. I use extra firm nonsilken tofu that has been frozen, thawed, and squeezed. I sprinkled some cornstarch over the cubes (but I don't know if it actually did anything, in this case. I used sriracha, and just added some soy sauce and sugar. I fried my tofu in canola oil until golden..added the sauce...and it took about 10-15 minutes to really thicken. I served it over brown rice and asparagus on the side. Soooo good! The texture and flavor were both perfect! Thanks!

I love sweet barbecue sauce and this was fabulous and very easy.  Next time, I think I will marinate the tofu in the sauce first and then bake it.  This was really great and kid friendly.

This was so so good. We served this with brown rice sweet potato and corn. Next time I am going to serve it with corn bread!! YumYum! My kids really liked it and asked for seconds! I wish I could find a good bbq sauce without HFCS. I didn't have time to make my own. Anyway, it is a great recipe. Highly recommend.
