Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 1/4 cup flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup canola oil
    1/4 cup & 2 tablespoons sugar
    1/4 cup & 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1 banana, mashed
    2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup vegan chocolate chips or carob chips

Directions:

Source of recipe: This is my veganized version of Tollhouse cookies.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mix together flour, soda and salt and set aside. In large bowl cream together oil, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla.  Mix in mashed banana and baking powder. Add flour mixture, and stir well. Add chips.  Drop by rounded tablespoons onto cookie sheet*.

Bake 9-11 minutes.

*Use banana and baking powder or other equivalent to 1 Egg (banana and baking powder is what I use... it works really well, actually).

*The original recipe said to use an ungreased cookie sheet, but I like my cooking spray too much.  So I always spray everything before baking in it...  I don't think it really makes a difference.

dear lord these were outrageous. I figured I would use earth balance/spectrum spread instead of oil, but they didn't flatten out. They stayed the same shape. Howe'ver, they tasted SO good. Just a hint of banana is perfect. I may use the oil nect time to see how it turns out.

How many cookies does this make?

i might make these for my friends who still believe that vegan food is gross...and surprise them about it later. these cookies turned out great, except they burnt a bit..so i might suggest cooking them at 350 for 8 min instead...

Holy cow! These were incredibly delicious! This is my first time making vegan cookies and I have no desire to look for other recipes after making these cookies. I didn't have chocolate chips and these turned out marevelous! Next time I will try these with peanut butter. I halved this recipe and it made 4 medium sized cookies, or 6-8 small cookies. My only regret is halving this recipe! I will most definitely make these again. Does anyone know if these are unhealthy? If they lack eggs and milk, these can't be too bad for you. I could be wrong though. I LOVE it when vegetarian - and moreso when its vegan! - foods taste better than carnivoric food. 5 stars all the way!

These were delicious. I could hardly get myself to stop eating them. Next time I make them I don't think I'll use as much oil, as 1/2 a cup really is a lot.

can i make this with En-r-G egg replacer? every time i make chocolate chip cookies with banana, the flavor is kinda overpowering

These were by-far the best looking vegan cookies I have made. The actually look really appetizing to my skeptical non-veg family. And they are really yummy!!! I used applesauce instead of banana (about a lttle less then 1/4 cup) because I also don't like the banana-ie taste. I agree with a comment above that 1/2 of oil is too much, they tasted a bit too oily. Next time I'm going to try 1/4 cup oil with 1/4 soymilk instead.

I made these again, but more substitutions to make it healthier. I used applesauce instead of the banana again, and used a little less than 1/2 cup of soymilk instead of 1/2 cup oil, with just 2 Tbl. oil. They turned out really light and fluffy, and alot less calories, but they weren't as good as using the 1/2 cup oil.

I just finnishe'd making these, and they turned out quite well. Theyre nice and chewy. I wasn't sure how they would taste with the banana, but its actually really good. Nice job =]

I modified this some to suit what I had on hand, and it made great banana cookies!  I'll post that recipe myself thou.  =)

Making them this time, I used Ener-G egg replacer but followed the rest of the recipe, and the batter was a little dry to work with, which of course made the cookies dry.  Still good thou!  I think if you're going to use an egg replacer, you need to add about a 1/4 cup "milk" product of choice or however much necessary to give it a doughy consistancy.  I might crumble this batch up into some "milk", one at a time of course, and eat it like a desert cup or something.  I also I had to adjust the time for the my oven, but that's probably normal.

These were great! Crisp brown edges. Sweet and moist inside. Bananay taste. Not skimpy on the chocolate chips either.

These cookies are perfect!
I've been trying different choc-chip cookies all week and these were the winners!
They were gone too fast, I didn't have time to take a picture!

fluffy and spongy, stayed soft for their entire two and half-week existence...I added about 2 Tbs. of cocoa powder to the mix because I'm a chocolate fiend, and I only had about 1/3 cup of carob chips, and that was plenty to satisfy me!  good stuff.

These are certainly different from the "Happy Vegan Choc Chip Cookie" that I always make from this site, but I had a banana I needed to use before it disappeared into brown goo.

I wouldn't use quite so much sugar next time and I would only bake them for about 7 minutes! My first batch was nearly burned!

Otherwise, this dough was AMAZING! I couldn't stop eating it. It really reminds me of the Tollhouse cookies my mom used to make all the time when I was a kid.

I am lazy and didnt want to have to shape cookies so I stuck the batter in a 9x9 pan and baked for about 15 mins. They were pretty cakey/ spongy/ almost crumbly- not the way i like them but then again, this IS a cookie recipe. I also added alot of cocoa powder (ALOT- maybe that's why they werent gooey?).  I used 1/4 Cup oil and 1/4 Cup soymilk- but I ended up needing more soymilk to make the batter "wet".  They were alright. I'll probably make them again and mess with the recipe a little bit... or maybe follow it exactly and it'll turn out much better Smiley

I modified the recipe, incorporating other posted reviews, and the dough turned out to be quite soupy.  I swapped the 1/2 c canola oil for 1/4 canola + 1/4 soy milk and replaced the banana w/applesauce.  The batter was way-runny, so I added another 2/3 c or so of flour, which helped thicken it up.  I'm by no means a quality baker - every thing I bake is pretty much an experiment - but my results with those two tweaks were not so greaton their own.  oh well.

Cool Okay, so modified this by using all whole wheat pastry flour, I added about 3 TBSP of natural mint cocoa, cut down sugar to only 1/2 cup of organic evaporated cane sugar, used 1/4 cup light olive oil instead of canola, added 1 tsp of peppermint extract ( I was craving mint chocolate cookies), 1 cup of applesauce to make up for the banana and remaining oil.  I used dark chocolate (72%) in chunks.  I had to add a little more flour because I think the applesauce was a bit too much.  Overall the batter was delicious and the peppermint hit the craving spot!  This is a great base for any chocolate combo cookie...

I made these cookies a few weeks ago for a Halo 3 party and people are STILL talking about them. My boyfriend's mother said they were the best chocolate chip cookies she'd ever had! I didn't change anything about the recipe and they were perfect - gooey, chocolatey, and yummy. I had been using the other chocolate chip cookie recipe from this site, but I think this one will be my staple from now on.

My husband and I love these! He especially loves the hint of banana..I think it's a great egg-sub. I've made them with carob chips and vegan choc chips..and I love the choc chips! I've also made these as cookies..and as a big pan (so they made bars)...I loved them even more as bars. Thanks!  Smiley

I loved these.....of course I was seriously craving chocolate, chocolate chip cookies after seeing a beautiful cover shot on a non-vegan book cover.

So, I found these and whipped them up.  I used applesauce, since my banana recently turned black.....and I added 1/4 cup cocoa powder and maybe a tiny bit more sugar to counter the cocoa.

They turned out better than I had imagined possible....mmm.....

These were very good. The only thing is that I think the name is a misnomer. I think they should be called 'Chocolate Chip Banana Cookies'. The banana taste was much stronger than I expected, but it was good (followed recipe exactly, btw). However they definitely don't taste like Tollhouse cookies because of the banana. I wouldn't give them to someone and call them chocolate chip cookies.
But the texture was perfect-- they stayed soft but not too soft and didn't flatten out like every other vegan cookie I've made...which is probably because of the banana! So maybe next time to cut down on the banana taste but keep the good texture I'll try half banana and half egg-replacer or something.
Also I noticed that most of the other posters and all of the other pic-takers added cocoa to the cookies, so perhaps that cut down on the banana taste. I was looking for a traditional chocolate chip cookie so I didn't.

Amendment to my previous review: Just realized I made a minor change to the recipe by using 1/4 cup oil and 1/4 cup earth balance instead of 1/2 cup oil. Also I found that 1 cup of chocolate chips was too many. I had between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of chips left over.
