Tasty Truffles

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    8 ounces vegan cream cheese
2 cups vegan chocolate chips (semisweet, bittersweet, whatever you like)
    2 cups powered sugar
optional stuff - more chocolate chips or almond bark to coat, chopped nuts, coconut, cocoa, flavored liqueur, etc

Directions:

1. Blend vegan cream cheese and powered sugar, slowly adding the sugar to the cream cheese (I use a food processor...I suppose you could try a blender if you don't mind powdered clothing...)

2. Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave.

3. Add the melted chips to the cream cheese mixture. blend until its all mixed in.

4. If you want, put half of the mixture in a glass bowl and refrigerate that, and then add a tablespoon or more of flavored liqueur (hazelnut is nice) to the remaining mixture and blend a little bit longer.

5. Put the mixture in the refrigerator for about an hour.

6. Roll the mixture with your hands into little balls.

7. Roll the balls in the chopped nuts, coconut, cocoa, etc, get imaginative!

8. Refrigerate until you feel like eating them...mmmm

9. Can also melt some more chocolate chips or almond bark and dip the truffles in that and refrigerate, then they have a hard coat over them.

I've never heard of vegan powdered sugar, just turbinado. What is the brand called so I can ask my grocery store to carry it.

the hain company makes an organic powdered sugar that is also vegan. it is sold at most health food stores, but if you cannot find it, check out their website http://www.hainpurefoods.com

You can powder sugar in the blender ... you just have to powder a lot of it at once, otherwise the blade just flings the grains around and doesn't actually accomplish anything. Do other people have any luck asking grocery stores to carry things? I have enough difficulty convincing them to carry spinach regularly - if I asked for vegan powdered sugar, they'd probably laugh in my face.

Never solidified enough to roll into balls, but this was really tasty to just eat with a spoon.  Tasted just like real truffles!  Grin

Just add another cup of powdered sugar, and it will work perfectly.  This recipe is almost identical to one in the PeTA Celebrity Cookbook, except for the difference in amount of sugar.

These were good. I used a hand mixer to blend the stuff. I also added extra powdered sugar, as suggested by mbenedet and it hardened up perfectly. At first I thought it was too hard but it wasn't. I rolled them in sprinkles (check ingredients), powdered sugar, cocoa and melted chocolate, and they looked great.

Since the first time I made these I've made them a few more times. I brought them to a couple of gatherings and people really raved about them. The ones rolled in the colored non-pareils went really fast as did the ones rolled in cocoa and melted chocolate. If you bring these somewhere make sure you label them or tell people they're candy, cause at first noone tried them because they thought they were doughnut holes! Once they heard they were truffles they were eaten up. If you're into truffles, I also recommend cookies n 'cream' truffles (the recipe is on this site) which people also really liked.

i made these. they were good but i felt something was missing....that might just be me though. my friend enjoyed them and they were really chocolaty! just be sure to add extra sugar. i used a mini scoop to make the balls all the same size and rolled them in coconut. i think they tasted better then next day after sitting in the fridge for a while! i might still look for a recipe that doesn't use the cream cheeze in them because that stuff has a funky flavor.

These are delicious!!  (even though, I can only eat like one at a time.)  I doubled the recipe, because I have people over that like sweets alot.  The truffles turned out perfect.  I chopped some nuts, granola, and used some coconut to roll it in, so there would be a variety.  Yummmmmmy!! Cheesy<---This is what I feel like after eating them...Hahaha
