Beer Bread with Nuts

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    3 cups self-rising flour
    1 12-oz can of beer
    2 tablespoons sugar

Directions:

Mix ingredients and put into greased loaf pan.  Dont overmix.  Bake at 375 degrees for about 1 hour.

Options:  You can cut down on the self-rising flour and add whole-wheat flour, bran flakes, rolled oats, nuts, and 1/2 cup raisins in any combination.  For example, I use 1 cup white flour, 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1/2 cup bran flakes and 1/2 cup rolled oats.

Makes 1 Loaf.

Hello did your know that most alcohol including beer has animal products in it. There is some vegan beer in Australia but I can't remember the brand because I don't drink beer.

My father owns a micro-brewery here in Ottawa, Canada. Our head brewer has worked at many breweries before as has our sales man, and they both confirm that the majority of (beer) breweries use fish bladders in the filtering stage of making beer. We beleive this is important for vegans to know! We do not use fish bladders or any other animal products in our beer. Unfortunatly our beer is currently only here in Ottawa. Its called Heritage Premium Lager.

This bread was so quick and easy to make.  Its crisp on the outside and moist on the inside.  I made this bread with whole wheat flour and added 1 tsp. baking powder and 1 tsp. baking soda and it worked well.  I think I would add a little more salt for flavor next time.

All I happen to have on hand is some O'Douls... the whole alcohol free thing won't mess with this bread's rise, will it? Thanks all. (I'm new here by the way. Hi everyone!)

Hi Mizzou!  Another feline, cool!  I haven't tried this one, but I really don't think that alc/non-alc will cause a problem.  Sure hope it works out!

Grin

If your worried about the veganism of you beer and cant find vegan beer in your area MAKE YOUR OWN.  I have tried a recipe from Alton brown on the food network and made some fun beer.  Then used it this bread.

I also threw in some rosemarry chopped really really fine some garlic powder and some almosen sprinkle ("parm" cheese recipe from fettuccine no frado recipe on this site) into this bread also.
Made it a little grainy but I don't mind the texture

This was the fastest bread ever! i made it with tooheys extra dry (my favorite australian beer) and added oats. at first i was a little worried it would be a waste of a good beer but it came out very good, wholesome and a little bit sweet.

Beer bread has long been a valued tradition in my family, which contains mostly meat eaters. However, when I became a vegetarian my mother did her research, and discovered that all beers made by Anheuser-Busch and Heineken are vegan and vegetarian friendly, which is nice, as they are readily available in the states.

The majority of popular beers and spirtis do not use animal products in the production of their beers.  However the majority of wines do.  Here is a directory of breweries and distilleries which have been checked and often double-checked by many concerned beer-loving vegans:

You'll probably be glad to see your favorite beer is okay.  And if you love a local favorite that's not on the list, you'll find that most local breweries will quickly answer any inquiries, and that they usually take pride in their pure ingredients.
The fish bladder thing is pretty old school.  It's not cost-effective and so not many breweries do this anymore.

awesome! i eliminated one cup of flour and replaced it with 1/2 cup of sun dried tomatoes and 1/2 cup of shredded zukes. also added some fresh sage, thyme, and minced garlic. highly recommended! i used new beliguim (vegan) mothership wit. made sandwiches with it -- my non-vegan, picky husband said it was the best he ever had. yay!

I just want to mention that when you cook with beer, the alcohol cooks out and the flavor concentrates, so if you plan on making this, wait until you have some nice beer on hand--don't be like me and use that Natty Ice you found in the back of the fridge left over from a game of beer pong long forgotten.

I tried this beer bread recipe since it is had even fewer ingredients than the one I usually follow.  It turned out swell.  I used whole wheat flour and added flax seeds instead of nuts.
