Chewy Breadmachine Bagels

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 1/2 teaspoons of yeast
    2 cups of all-purpose flour
    1 tablespoon of sugar
    1 teaspoon of salt
3/4 cup of very warm water

Directions:

Place ingredients in your bread machine. Select dough or manual cycle.  When cycle is finished, remove the dough from the machine and roll into 6 snakes about a 10 inches long.  Press the ends tightly together to form a doughnut shape.  Bring a large pot of water to a boil.  Place bagels in the boiling water for 2 minutes. (The longer they boil the chewier they are.)   Remove from the water and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until golden in color.

Try: half all-purpose and half whole wheat flour.  Add a teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of raisins and an extra tablespoon of vegan sugar for Cinnamon Raisin Bagels

Serves: 6 Bagels

The bagel recipe is a gift from heaven. Thank you. they are wonderful. Did 3 cinamon and 3 garlic.Marion

I made a double batch of the cinnamon raisin ones.  They turned out quite well!  I used maple syrup instead of vegan sugar and whole wheat flour instead of white.  I'm going to try making sesame seed ones next.

These are absolutely AMAZING!!! They sure beat any store (or even bakery) bought ones. I double the recipe and it works fine in the machine (though you have to help in the early stages of mixing once or twice).

Thank you for this recipe. I cooked these on Saturday and they are delicious. I used half white and half whole wheat flower and put some sesame seeds on when I baked them. Really good and quite simple to make.

Awesome!!!  I couldnt get them to stick together to complete the circle, but who says they have to?  My first bagels, and I love them.  Thanks!!

I love these bagels!  We go mad for them at home!  Part of the fun is trying to make them into the right shape, and we've taken to rolling the dough into a ball and then sticking our fingers through it to make it into a donut shape.  Perfect!  Thanks for posting this recipe!  We love it!

These bagels are fantastic!  I can't believe that its so easy to make bagels.  Mine were not all perfectly shaped, but I am sure that with practice, they would be perfect.

I also baked mine at 500 and they turned out great!  Will definately be making them again.

This was a pretty nice recipe. I think I left it in the water a little too long, but other than that I think I would only need to prefect the size and joining the ends. Howe'ver, I found that this recipe is also at this link: http://www.nancyskitchen.com/recipe_data.asp?Name=BREADMAKER+BAGELS

Another variation:  double the recipe, add 1/2 cup dried cranberries and the grated rind from one orange.  In a double recipe, you can use 3 1/2 cups King Arthur white whole wheat and 1/2 cup white flour and really up the nutrition value, but it still tastes great.

This is an amazing recipe ^_^ (I'm eating the bagels as I type) I made garlic dill bagels with this recipe but adding 1 tsp of dried dill and 1 tsp of garlic powder. Will be experimenting more with this recipe. But definitely will not go back to buying bagels.

Being the Health Snob that I am, I have unnaturally vehement aversion to white flour.  Tongue  Could I do this with all whole-wheat if I added some gluten? How much, do you think? I was thinking I may try it with three tablespoons or so. Wish me luck! Oh, and another thing; do you let the bagels rise before boiling them? It seems that you would, as there is no rising times mentioned anywhere else. I suppose I need to get more familiar with my bread machine. Tongue

excellent
the few that rised before they were boiled were better than the ones that didn't.  i think i'm going to let them rise for maybe half an hour next time Smiley

First, I would like to say that this recipe prompted my purchase of a bread machine from craigslist. hehe Smiley For my first time making bagels they turned out terrific! I made them with half whole wheat and half unbleached white flour. I topped them with Earth Balance, onion flakes, roasted garlic, and salt. I used a bit too much butter, but overall we both thoroughly enjoyed recipe. I will be using this again with different variations. Thank you so much! Smiley

These are fantastic.  I made one batch on a cold afternoon as a whim, and we haven't bought a pre-packaged bagel since then.  My husband and son love them, and that's a huge plus with me, because they don't like anything

Once a week I make a double batch of plain ones for them, and I make a single batch for myself, adding orange zest and 1/4 cup of dried cranberries.  They are amazing.

I am so glad I picked this recipe for my first attempt at using my breadmachine!  These were excellent and super easy!  I followed another commenter's advice and added minced garlic and dill.
I'm never buying bagels again!
