Healthy Fast Food Biscuits

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    3 cups unbleached flour
    1 cup whole wheat flour
    2 teaspoon salt
    2 tablespoon Sucanat
    6 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups soy milk plus 2 tablespoon white vinegar
    6 tablespoon canola oil
1 tablespoon soy melted margarine, optional

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.  Add other ingredients.  Stir until dough forms.  Allow to sit for 30 minutes if time permits.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness.  Cut into 12 biscuits using a biscuit cutter or a glass.  Brush the tops with melted margarine, if desired.

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10 minutes or until browned.  (Do not let biscuits touch.)

These biscuits are thick and are best used to sandwich other items.  Scrambled tofu is a great filler!

Serves: 12

we substituted ww pastry flour and turbinado for sucanat and rice vinegar for white vinegar.  these biscuits were unbelievable and super delicious.  note:  be very careful on the oven temp. do not over brown.  p.s. add room temp. margerine to the dough prior to proofing...my secret

These biscuits are absolutely fantastic!  Even though ww flour is used, they are light and fluffy and incredibly flavorful.  I will undoubtedly be making them again.  I substituted turbinado for the Sucanat.

I just made these, they are fabulous.  I halved the recipe and just used all purpose flour.  Vanilla soymilk and apple cider vinegar added yummy flavor.  Great recipe.

I would like to know what is Sucanat? Can anyone tell me.

Archived comment by: cooker28
Sure, I can tell you. Sucanat is a blend of the words Sugar Cane Naturally.  And that is what it is.  The dried juice of sugar cane.  That is all.  It is dark brown and dry.  Use it like sugar, but it has more taste and a lot more vitamins.

i was just looking for an easy bread. reading the other comments, i was skeptical. how could plain old bread be "amazing?" but OH MY GOSH, THESE ARE AMAZING! they taste like the flakey pillsbury biscuits i haven't eaten in so long. i could eat the whole batch in one sitting.
i used non fat soy milk and apple cider vinegar, and i did not use the optional margarine.

these biscuits were truly awesome.  i made them for my christmas day dinner with veg posole (hominy, beans and chile).  they turned out perfect!  my first try at making a bread product from scratch.  i also used ww pastry flour and raw sugar, and olive oil (had to use what i had handy), and they were so simple.  this recipe will definitely be in my permanent file of winning recipes!!  thanks, robin!

These were great!  However, this made more than 12 biscuits for me.  I measured 1/2'' with a ruler.  Next time I make these, I will roll them out to be 3/4''-1'' in thickness.  But very tasty!

So so so good!  Great with gravy (I used the punk rock chicpea gravy from VwaV).  Easy to make too.  I halved the recipe and it still made 12 biscuits, and I measured also.  Will try making them thicker next time.  Thanks for the yummy recipe!

I halved the recipe, and now I'm regretting that decision, because these biscuits are so good!  They were perfect with soysage and gravy, but I think they're going to be even better with peanut butter and jelly for lunch tomorrow!

Following oli's suggestion, I used 1/2 cup of pastry flour in addition to the wheat flour and scaled back on the white flour.  I plan to use this recipe for all of my biscuit needs from now on Cool

These were awesome, I even got asked for the recipe.  I had one with a baked potato, gravy and green beans.  Yummmmm!  Kinda just eyeballed the thickness and patted it down into a circle with my fingertips, worked out great. If anyone is interested, each biscuit is about 180 calories.

I scaled this recipe down since i'm the only one eating it, but the batter was way to dry and impossible to mix, I added a little more milk, still dry, added a little more then it was to wet & gross so I had to throw it out :-( oh well, it sounded good.

These are so fast and easy!
I didn't even let them rise and they came out really good.

I only used unbleached flour and let them rise for only 10 minutes without the melted margarine. We decided to put vegan gravy on some and jam on others. They  were a bit dry, but some gravy or jam makes it perfect.
So if you are planning to eat biscuits with something these will definetly do. Otherwise.. not so good.

I don't think that these are quite fluffy enough to earn the title of "fast food-like", but within the biscuit realm, these are some of the best! I've never tried making biscuits with whole wheat flour, but I am glad I did. Thanks for the lovely recipe! I'll never have to cut in shortening again!  Cheesy

I love these! I made them the first time to put them on top of a veg pot pie filling..they didn't get quite done on the bottom (next to the filling), but they were still great. I saved some of the dough in the fridge and made them later...fabulous! Thanks. : )

I'm in love. So is everyone else who ate these.

I made sloppy joe's out of some and I'm eating one right now. The rest will be saved for peanut butter and jelly or margarine and jam. Or sandwiches. Or just plain.
Man, anything goes with these.

I just now made these, and they weren't that good. They didn't have much taste, and they were very thick & chewy, and I did follow the recipe exactly.
