Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 1/2 cups flour (bread flour works best)
    2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    2/3 cup very warm water
1 teaspoon garlic or onion salt (whichever you prefer)

Directions:

Using food processer put in flour, garlic salt, oil and water and process until it gathers into a ball.  Add more water or flour as needed (if it is dry more water, if too moist more flour).  Form into little balls (should be about 12).  Using either a tortilla maker or the bottom of a glass flatten out the dough into tortilla shape.  Make thinner for thinner tortillas, thicker for thicker ones.  Cook over medium to medium high heat in stick free cookware, or use tortilla maker.  Delicious....

Serves: 12

Preparation time: 30 min

a quick 2 tortillas, medium in size (fajita wrap, quesedillia shell, burrito wrap, enchillada or whatever you care to call tortillias) or 4 smaller tortillas:  1/2 cup wheat flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 cup warm/hot water approx.  1   teaspoon olive oil With fork, mix dry ingredients well, add water.  Gather into a ball, pour little bit of olive oil onto fingertips and mix into nice soft ball.  Divide into equal portions (2 or 4), roll out into tortilla shapes.  Have a pan ready (med. hot) and lightly pan fry the tortillas one at a time to solidify and allow to be stacked on top of one another without sticking.

A great and easy tortilla recipe.  Worked out wonderfully for our mexi-night.  All I need now is a tortilla press!  Flattening them all out by hand is sort of a drag.

Also, these keep great in a round, flat-bottomed Rubbermaid, for leftovers.  They also make great tortilla chips if you bake them.

I loved this-it was quick and easy and yummy! I used regular salt though. I made refried bean quesadillas!

Very simple recipe to put together, although flattening by hand was quite a task,  Wink  I'm really grateful for this recipe, cause it's difficult to find flour tortillas where I'm at in Korea, and when you crave 'em, you crave 'em.

An easier way to flatten the tortillas, if you don't have a tortilla press, is to roll in a ball, put a sheet of plastic wrap on top, then squash with the bottom of a pan. My friend and I did this in college and it worked great.

a wine bottle or other such glass bottle either floured or oiled also works wonderfully.  did it that way in panama living on an organic farm... mmmmm!!  i'll do this one soon, maybe adding some fresh garlic and potatoes, similar to the indian aloo parantha (indian potato flat bread).  sooooooooo many possibilities!

These were better than what I always buy at the store.  I used a rolling pin and made them really thin....got about 20 large ones.

I loooooved these. But they were kind of hard to roll up for enchiladas. Mine were kind of thick, because I had no rolling pin or tortilla press, so that's probably why they didn't roll as well.

I thought these were pretty good. You've got to make sure to cover them while they are warm to keep them soft. They didnt look half as good as the ones in the pic by Emily though. It's amazing how thin you can roll these out to and still be able to pick up.

Okay... i must have done something wrong...... I used 1/2 white 1/2 wheat flour and halved the recipe.  I ended up with only 3 thin tortillas, and they got crispy when they cooked, they were not foldable at all.  What did I do??

I just got done making these and they were delicious. Definitely better than any of the grocery store versions.

Fantastic! I halved the recipe(I got 4 tortillas), added 1T each of parsley and chives. I added a1/4t kosher salt also. The only real change I made to the basic recipe  Is I used 1/2T each of sesame oil and olive oil. Pinch of sesame seeds for texture. I didn't have ground garlic so I only used onion.

They are soooooo Good.... did I mention they are tastey... yeah!  Grin Cheesy
