Quick Start Breakfast Drink

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 cups pineapple juice
2 ripe medium bananas, peeled and sliced
2 cartons (8-oz each) vanilla yogurt
1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
    1/4 cup wheat germ (optional)
    1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions:

For a large blender, combine all ingredients in blender jar. Whir until smooth. For a small blender, combine one-half of the ingredient at a time. Makes 4 servings.

Because of Celiac Disease, I cannot use wheat germ.  I would love to hear from anyone who can give me a substitute for wheat germ that is gluten free.  Also, I have been using ice cubes when I am using fresh fruit.  Thanks....

It sounds great, and I urge people to make sure they use organic strawberries whenever possible, as commercially grown one harbour the most amount of pesticides, etc. as any fruit.

Fm: Sandy Email - sunshine@isd.net I added flax seed - gives it texture, sure, but its good for ya!  Also, used non-fat vanilla yogurt.

I, too, am a Celiac. I usually substitute rice bran or corn bran for wheat germ...usually found in health food stores. Ask if you cannot find it, or ask the owner to bring it in for you, one package at a time...this stuff goes rancid if not kept in freezer or fridge.

I like this with frozen chunks of bananas. They make it colder and smoother.  If bananas ripen faster than you can eat them, cut them into chunks and store them in the freezer.  They will be ready and waiting for you to use.

This was great!!  My husband and I really enjoyed it.  I also added flaxseed for more fiber!!

Its not necessary to add any type of extra fibre to this srink and bananas contain a lot. Just Fresh orange juice, yoghurt, honey, banana and love make a great breakfast drink but also an IDEAL way of giving energy without bulk.  My son, who plays football at national level always drank this before training sessions or a big game because he didn't want a big meal in his stomach when on the field.

For Lori: Hi, gluten free alternative for this drink could be rice flakes for instance.

here's a tip, whenever I make any kind of smoothie freeze your fruit first, this way you don't have to use ice make sure you peel bananas before freezing!

RE:_For Lori: Hi, gluten free alternative for this drink could be rice flakes for instance.  I personally wouldn't use rice flakes raw as they're quite indigestible, but as a gluten intolerant my self the closest thing ive found to wheat is buck wheat, which despite its name is gluten free. you can get it in groats, flour or flakes and it tastes very similar to wheat and is fine eaten raw hope this helps kat

I believe hemp hearts are gluten free - also lots of protein & fibre. Hope that helps.
