Sloppy Lens

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 cup of brown/bargain-bag lentils
1 can of Hunts Manwich sauce
    2 cups of water
8 slices whole wheat bread or 4 buns

Directions:

1. Rinse, pick through, and drain the lentils.

2. Pour water and lentils into a medium-sized pot, and bring to a boil.

3. After rolling boil is reached, cover the lentils, lower heat, and simmer for about 50 minutes (5 minutes give or take in difference).

4. After lentils are cooked through transfer to a medium saucepan, add the Manwich sauce, mix them together, and heat the mixture through at medium heat.

5. After the mixture is cooked through (this won't take long) get out the bread and serve four equal portions of the mixture over two slices each person of bread.

6. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE: the recipe is for four people BUT this mix is BIG... rather low in calorie though, so I would recommend eating these with a fork. Or if you prefer a less messy Len, serve it up for more people!

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 55 minutes

Just a side note- recipe sounds good, but Hunts is owned by Con Agra which is one of the biggest meat producers (think huge factory farms) in the US.  They also use GMO food, so it isn't animal friendly or healthy.  I think I may try it anyways with another type of sauce.

well actually since the ingredients are vegan it is vegan... As long as I am not buying their meat or anything like that I am not supporting directly that cause... plus my family does not exactly have the biggest income and Hunts is VERY cheap... I was unaware though that I was indirectly supporting con agra... I will take this note and try to find a substitute... I will try to make my own next time! thanx!

My two cents:  it is impossible to avoid the big food companies now.  ConAgra has bought lightlife and Dean Foods (the largest regular milk producer and dairy cow subjugator in the country) owns Silk and BirdsEye (which I think is owned by ConAgra) owns Cascadian Farms and someone now owns Annies Homegrown, so I think it is no use.  Organic/natural foods are the fastest growing segment of the food industry, so it isn't surprising this is the case. (Even the really earthy and natural sounding names are owned by big companies.  I had a heated email exchange with one of them after they discontinued my favorite brand of seitan after they bought out the company).  So now I just try to evaluate each food on its own merits through the nutritional and other information on the package.

Thanks for the idea.  I have been looking for ways to use lentils - so far I am only accustomed to them if they come in a prepackaged rice concoction or soup.  I'm sure we can find some vegan version of the Manwhich sauce to sub if that's what we want - but personally I think the more we demand foods that do not have meat in them the more they will have to bend to our will.  Like it or not, they have to realize there are more and more people who are cutting down their meat consumption even if they are not full fledged vegetarians. We have power, don't be afraid to use it.  Also we can write to companies and ask for more meat-free products.

what is manwich sauce?

Archived comment by: rufus
Manwich sauce is a canned sauce used to make sloppy joe sandwiches. If you don't have a canned sloppy joe sauce available, mix the following ingredients and simmer them with your filling for about 10 minutes. 1/3 cup ketchup. 1/4 cup water. 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce. 1/8 teaspoon red pepper sauce. A pinch of salt. Make sure you check the ingredients on the worcestershire sauce. Some brands have anchovies, but I find that the cheaper brands don't have them.

Well actually you don't have to substitute the Manwich sauce... the ingredients are all vegan! PROMISE and it tastes really good! They were just talking about the company but yeah EVERYONE should try it!!!!!! I had not had any sloppy joes for a LONG time and this REALLY hit the spot!:)

Heres another good use for lentils.  Look up the recipe on here for Unbelievable Lentil Tacos.  MARAVILOSO!! Sooo good and sooo easy! I didn't have the tomato sauce, so used 6oz tomato paste. I did top it up with water a couple of times. Also, here's my recipe for vegan Taco Seasoning: 4.5 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. cumin powder 0.5 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. onion powder 0.25 tsp. lemon powder (optional) 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar 0.5 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. flour 0.5 tsp. cocoa powder Mix all together and store in airtight container. Makes approx. 4 tablespoonsfull - the equivalent of 1 package of seasoning (enough to season 1 pound of meat substitute). This is very mild as we have a toddler in the house, so you'll have to add crushed chilies or cayenne powder to heat it up if that's how you like it.

I added Marjon brand tofu crumbles - the kind that resembles ground beef -  to the lentils, and for sauce I used a store brand dry packet of sloppy joe seasoning, water, and a 6 oz. can of tomato paste.  I usually make this with just the tofu crumbles, but the addition of lentils was great!   Cheesy

Alright, so I just made this, and it makes an enormous batch. I would figure I could get ten good sized sandwiches out of it. Plus. I used the Manwich sauce (because I saw it in my cupboard) and I thought it was very sugary. It's got lots of high fructose corn syrup in it. I think if I made these again, I would just use my own sauce. But it is very cheap, and healthy minus the sugar part.
For the whole pan of mix (a lot!) there are 500 calories, 43 g fiber, and 39 g protein. I will definitely make this again.

This turned out great. I have previously tried making sloppy-joes using TVP, but it did not go over too well. This recipe however went over very well. In the future I will probably figure out how to make my own sauce (although the Manwich sauce is great...too bad Con Agra makes it). For now though I will continue to make as is. Thanks a bunch!

Amazingly simple and good... Though I over cooked the lentils a bit but still great... Taste good even cold... But I Definetly suggest cutting up some Litelife Smartdog Veggie protein links into the sloppy joe mix then just scoop with toast or eat as a sandwhich. Thumbs Up

Love this recipe!!! Unfortunatley though I don't want to anger anybody but according to my math... and ingredients these are 600 calories for the batch not 500... 1 cup lentils @ 80 cal per 1/4 cup dry is 320 plus the can of sauce 40 cal per serving (7) per can is 280... 280 plus 320 is 600.  Still not bad for as much as you get just thought everyone should know. 600 calories for the batch not 500

My Manwich sauce was labeled 30 calories per serving. I counted my lentils as 70 cals per serving too.

Not my favorite, but my husband LOVED it. So I will be adding this to the dinner rotation.
