Black Bean Burgers

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 can black beans, drained
1/4 cup fried onions (fresh or packaged)
2 slices multigrain vegan bread, crumbled finely
    Cracker crumbs
Salt, pepper, other seasonings (your choice)
Oil or no-stick spray (for frying)

Directions:

In large bowl, mash beans.  Mix in crumbled vegan bread, onions and spices.  Mix thoroughly, and add just enough cracker crumbs to make patties capable of holding together.  Form mixture into patties or balls.  (These can be coated with more cracker crumbs, if desired.)

Fry patties on both sides in a lightly greased frying pan.

Serve on buns, or any way you like em!

P.S.: Works with almost any kind of bean!

These were SUPER!!!  Yummy!  This is good to make if you really like to play with food in your hands while you make it:)Nice and squishy and it doesn't stick to your hands. And the finishe'd product is splendiferous! I loved everything about these.  Thank you very much for the recipe, I will be using it often.

Very tasty to eat as a pattie!!!! Word of warning for people who don't use canned beans; Add 2 cups of beans(16oz.) and add a little water to the mess to make it all hold together. Other than my problem with prep. these were sooooo good!!!!!

i tried this recipe thinking it would be like the black bean burgers an old friend used to make but i was wrong. the burgers were ok, i probably won't be making them again because no one in my family really enjoyed it

As we say in my hometown of Hilo, Hawaii, ONOLICIOUS! (means it was very good, very tasty) I mixed in a can of diced green chilies and added garlic instead of onions and it was very good. Ate in a whole wheat pita pocket with red bell peppers, avocadoes and tofu cream cheese.... mmmmm....thank you for posting the recipe!

We really enjoyed these.  I added 2 large cloves of minced fresh garlic about 1/2 way through cooking the onions and a couple of dashes of cayenne for good measure!

My 8 yo son loved these.  We are just now converting to being vegetarian (not vegan at this time) and I was thrilled with the results.

cool cool. i just made these but i added a whole bunch of extra stuff. i added extra garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander seed, chili powder, a chopped semi-dry red chili, a little bit of ground round and grated zuchinni. instead of frying them, i covered in flour and put them under a high broiler for a few minutes on each side. i didn't add the bread but that was my bad (we're outta bread...) because now they're a little sketchy with holding together and i didn't want to add too much cracker, but no matter, they're alright. i've made this type of burger befopre and added mushroom and grated carrot. mmmmm mmmmm good!! thanks.

oh right and i fried the onion, ground round, zuchinni and spices and set to cool before i added them to the mashed beans.

Very tasty! I didn't add anything extra to the mixture since this was my first time making them, but I topped them with leftover sauteed mushrooms, peppers and onions. Even my mom, aunt, and grandma who aren't vegetarians loved them! Next time I will experiment with different seasonings and fillings. Thanks for sharing!  Smiley

Great recipe. We made it with lentils and dahl spice mix for flavoring (curry spice is good too for that combo). We made it several time, both fried and in the oven, with great success. An important thing is to make sure the bread is dry enough. You can supplement the bread crumbs with store-bought powdered crumbs to make them hold more. This recipe requires a lot of salty seasoning. We used plain salt, spike and also vegetable bouillon, and it was great !

I made these last night. I didnt have enough bread so i added about half the recommended amount. they kinda fell apart when they came out of the oven. but they were overall good with lots of ketchup.

I made these with a few changes.  I first sauteed some diced onions with garlic and mushrooms in some earth balance.  I added them to the mixture.  I added a tsp of soy sauce as well.  I didn't have any crackers so I used one slice of bread and I used another slice of bread that I toasted earlier and let cool so it was really hard.  I crumbled that up and used it in place of the crackers.  These were wonderful really.  Even better reheated with vegan cheese on top. These were easy to whip up in about 1/2 an hour....I will definitely make these again!  Before I started making these I cut up some potato wedges, seasoned them with garlic and greek seasoning and baked in the oven while I started on the burgers.  I fried 1/2 an onion and 2 cloves of garlic.  I used 3 slices of rye bread and didn't use any crackers.  For spices I used pepper, thyme, cumin, and some marjoram.  Squished everything together, rolled into balls and then pressed into patties.  So good, so easy I can't wait for lunchtime tomorrow so I can have the leftovers!  thanks for the recipe!

These were so scrumptious! I just made them for dinner and I loved it. I cut the recipe in half as I was the only one eating them. I also added corn, which was nice. I put them into patties and ate it like a burger. One thing, they do fall apart, I made a pretty big patty and it did not want to stay together. But totally worth it!!!

Love these!  I minced red & yellow pepper, green onion, one garlic, one chile and added 1/3 cup water (since I didn't use the canned beans).  Added 1 tsp of chili powder. 1/2 tsp of salt and cumin.  Supper yummy and just in time since the meat-eating Mister was parading around with HIS animalburgers yesterday.  I showed him!

These were really good with guacamole on them. I sautéed some garlic and mushrooms with the onions, and put a little bbq, and soy sauce in the bean mixture. Along with some garlic salt, salt, and pepper.
