Sweet Barbecue SauceIngredients (use vegan versions): 1 Tablespoon "Butter" (I use earth balance), melted
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 1/2 cup ketchup
3 or 4 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons dijon mustard
1 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce, (or braggs, low sodium soy sauce, or terriyaki sauce)
juice of one lemon (I used 3 tablespoons real lemon)
1 tablespoon liquid smoke (2 if you want more hickory taste)
4 garlic cloves, minced fine
1/2 tablespoon Very hot Mrs. Dash seasoning (***If don't have see note below)
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
pinch of salt
1/2 tablespoon maple syrup (*optional)
Directions:In a medium sized sauce pot add 1/2 tablespoon olive oil. When hot add the diced yellow onion, stir well to coat evenly with oil, sprinkle with a pinch of salt (kosher works best I think). Again Stir well, and let soften/sautee, stirring every 30-45 seconds.
In a bowl mix the rest of the ingredients together. If you want a really sweet sauce add 4 tablespoons of molasses, thats what I use. *If you want it extra smokey tasting use 2 tablespoons of liquid smoke instead of 1.If you want it to taste more honey like, you can add a 1/2 tablespoon of maple syrup. When onions are softened add the contents of the bowl to the pan, when bubbling, reduce the heat to med-low and let cook at a low boil/simmer for 10-30 minutes.

**The amount of time spent cooking this sauce depends on what you're using it for. If you're going to use it as say a basting sauce for tofu or something on the grill. I would cook about 20 minutes to thicken the sauce. If you're using it for baked beans or something that will be cooked in this sauce, 10 or 15 minutes is long enough. If you're going to use it as a basting sauce for the oven, or a dipping sauce or dressing you'll want to cook it the full 30 minutes.
***If you don't have the mrs. dash very spicy (which you should try because its amazingly awesome) add a pinch of chili flakes, 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, a pinch of garlic powder, and a pinch of onion powder. Its not exactly the same, but its pretty close.
****Its worth noting, that if at all possible try using a ketchup that doesn't have corn syrups or really heavy sugar in it. You might have to use 1 cup of ketchup and 1/2 cup water to prevent too much sugar taste. I learned this the hard way!
***** If you don't have access to a vegan worcestershire sauce, you can use braggs liquid aminos, or low sodium soy sauce (if you use the other stuff it'll be too salty), or even a vegan terriyaki sauce. However vegan worcestershire sauce makes it taste more like authentic bbq sauce.
