We always have a Greek spinach pie in phyllo (tofu based) and a Moosewood recipe for sweetpotato peanut butter soup and cranberries.  My mom brings a Czech sweet and sour cabbage and baked stuffing.  but I'm looking for one more festive mostly veggie dish.

What are the rest of you making this year?

Thanksgiving is a big deal in my boyfriend's family... and his parents are divorced, so there are always multiple thanksgiving dinners we're socially obligated to go to (Mom/step dad's, Dad's/dad's family's, Dad's girlfriend's/Dad's girlfriend's family's). And they're not, oh-eating-meat-is-what-makes-you-a-man people, they're very respectful... but there is still rarely vegetarian food. Last year I had three consecutive dinners of apple juice, mashed potatoes with cranberry chutney on top (because there as no vegan or even vegetarian gravy), with olives on the side. I could deal with that for one dinner... but THREE in a ROW?  Angry

This year, I'm insisting that we bring a dish to the dinners, since they're sort of potlucky anyway. I'm not sure if I'm going to bring more than one dish (one "from the bf", one from me) or just vary what I bring, but my ideas so far are:

Vegan pumpkin curry -- delicious. Just cook a regular red curry and then add pumpkin puree to it. I like to boil lime leaves and anise into mine in addition to all the flavorings from the curry paste.

The delicious, amazing vegan gravy recipe that's on here.

Veggie chili -- always pretty safe to bring for omnis.

Green beans that are NOT cooked in bacon grease. Ew.

Some Vegan dessert that I haven't decided upon yet.

Stuffing, making ranch to go with my salad and as a veggie dip, my gma usually makes some roasted potatoes instead of mashed (from the box) so i can eat them, i will probably bring a 7 layer dip as well, and for sure a pecan pie or i might try a vegan cheesecake... i always loved sides more than the nasty dry turkey anyways Smiley

Amymylove: Have you found a vegan cheesecake recipe that non-vegans/vegetarians still tend to like? I've tried a couple and none came out quite authentic enough...

I am going to try making seitan for the first time!  But I might buy a package just in case it doesn't work out.   Wink

Also, I am going to try to make a pumpkin pie/cheesecake thing, because my bothers and bf all love pumpkin stuff.  Otherwise, I'm sure I will be able to convince my family to make most of the sides I like (pretty much just the potatoes, really) vegan, and my bf's family is very flexible as well.

Has anyone tried Tofuerky(sp)? My family will still probably make a turkey, but are always willing to incoperate the food I eat as well, so I want to know if it's semi okay before I put it on the table.

I like Tofurkey just ok.  It seems kind of weird to serve a fake bird when there are so many truly vegan "real dishes" out there that really make my mouth water.

amymylove: Thanks for the suggestions! I was actually just looking around for a good pumpkin pie recipe that my omni-but-lactose-intolerant boyfriend can eat. He's suspicious of the ones that call for silken tofu... this sounds great!

As for Tofurkey... I'm with isaytomatoes. I've never actually had it but I just don't want it because I figure that, even if it's all right, there are other vegan dishes I would like more.

For straight up pumpkin pie, I've tried many recipes but I'm never 100% satisfied with any of them. I don't think it's the tofu thing or anything, maybe I just don't 100% like pumpkin pie period? Though I always think I will...

I'm gonna try pecan pie....yummy!!!
Lots of vegan gravy, mashed potatoes, and I want to try a stuffing recipe too.  Last year I made a bunch of homemade bread, which was a big hit...I might try to make bread bowls for some creamy potato-aspargus soup!

Definately sweet potato pie, my specialty, and sweet potato casserol from this website.  I remember there being a really good one on this website.

It looks like it is just going to be my son and I this year and that means no meat!!! Yeah!!!!  Last year I was at my moms, and there was turkey of course, but there was enough sides that I didn't have to eat it.

After reading these posts I may make a pecan pie instead of sweet potato pie this year...can I grind the pecans up for my son?  I am not sure it is safe to give him pecans yet, they say no nuts before 3 because of a choking hazard, but if I grind them up to a powder first...

So sweet potato casserol, a mountain of green bean's (DS's favorite!), mashed potatos with vegan gravy (VP has a very good recipe for this), stuffing, pecan pie for dessert and....

But what about a main course.  What should I make as a vegetarian version of turkey?  I don't want to do tofurky because I don't like processed foods, I want whatever it is to be home made.

SQ seitan is really yummy (i make it homemade) i've seen some seitan roast type recipes that look yummy.... as far as grinding up the pecans? i dunno... maybe pumpkin pie would be better for a youngin?
