Chick'n Bake

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    Dough:
1 1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup lukewarm water (dissolve yeast in luke warm water)
    1 tablespoon yeast
    1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted margarine
    Filling:
vegan mozzarella cheese (I use Follow Your Heart Mozzarella Cheeze )
1/4 cup fake bacon bits (I use Bac'uns)
    1/4 cup green onion, chopped
    1 package vegan chick'n strips (I use Lightlife Chick'n Strips )
1/2 tablespoon per bake Vegan Ranch Sauce

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 400 degrees F.

Grate about a half of the block of cheeze don't put all of the cheeze in the filling bowl put a little bit in a second bowl because your going to need it later.  Take the bac'uns and put them into a bowl add a tablespoon of water and warm in the microwave for 30 seconds this just softens them up so they aren't crunchy. Add the softened bac'uns to the filling bowl. Cut the green onion and add to the filling bowl along with the chick'n strips.

Ok so now your going to need the dough cut the dough into 2 pieces and roll it out flat put the 1/2 tablespoon of ranch sauce in the middle of the dough and spread it not all the way to the edges but almost. Then add half of the filling pull the dough over the filling making a pocket then roll don't fold the ends just pinch them a little. Sprinkle a little bit of the cheese onto the top of the chick'n bake and place in the oven until the whole thing is golden brown.

heh. i felt like such a bad vegan for thinking about these the other day..so salty..and delicious..with BACON. yumm. but so terrible..and then! here they are! in all of their veganized glory!  Smiley it was a good day when i found this recipe hehe.

i made a few changes, but they were still excellent. i kept the dough recipe the same, but changed up the filling a little because i didnt have a bunch of stuff.
instead of the chik'n strips, i used um. heh. two boca chik'n patties cut into strips (im pretty convinced that boca chik'n patties have magical properties..  Grin ) and then we had no fakey bacon bits so i chopped up some lightlife smart bacon and tossed that in with a teensy bit of liquid smoke so it would taste bacon-y. i also used this (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=22174.0) recipe for ranch dressing.

i grated half a block of fyh mozzarella , but i think it needed a little more and also a little more ranch. i used about a tablespoon per bake, and i thought they needed to be a little saucier. maybe ill concoct some sort of white sauce with the cheese and some soymilk and flour next time or something. i baked them for about twenty minutes and they were perfectly done. oh! maybe ill brush some melted eb or some soy creamer over the top to get them nice and brown. still. this was awesomeee. my little brother ate half of one with me (he put cheese on top of his since he's omni) and he said it was better than costco! i thought it was better too  Smiley

five stars!
and i have pictures (:

i used smart bacon, but ive always thought that it had no flavor so i added liquid smoke in as well..just a dash or two.

These are soo good! They are impressively similar. I prefer using Toffutii American cheese slices broken up into them and half a slice on top instead of the Follow your Heart brand mozzarella....way more flavor that way!

I made this tonight for dinner, and it turned out great.  I did use a different dough recipe, my standard pizza dough from VWAV (this recipe takes 1/2 the VWAV dough recipe), though I did sub 2 T Earth Balance margarine, melted, for the olive oil.  I made the dough in my bread machine (pretty much the only thing I use it for) and let it rise for about an hour before making this.  Instead of the bac'un bits, I used 4 strips of tempeh Fakin' Bacon that I crumbled and sauteed until crisp.  For the chick'n strips, I used a package of Morningstar ones, which I also sauteed until golden and seasoned with some salt and pepper; next time, I'll probably add some spice too, like crushed red chile peppers.  For the vegan cheese, I used Teese mozzarella.  I made my own ranch dressing with Vegenaise, spices, lemon juice, and soymilk; I did use more than 1 T per chick'n bake, more like 3-4 T.  Before topping with a bit more mozzarella, I brushed a bit of Earth Balance over the chick'n bakes for flavor and a nice golden finish.  I made 2 large chick'n bakes with this recipe, with each chick'n bake really being large enough to serve 2, so 4 servings total.  I did bake mine maybe 5 minutes longer as I was busy with something else in the kitchen when the timer went off at 20 minutes; they turned out beautifully done and perfectly golden.  I don't know anything about the Costco original, but this recipe is delicious.  If I were to add some veggies to this (which I may next time), I think sauteed mushrooms and spinach would be good additions.

This came out wonderfully!  I didn't make my own dough though.  I bought pizza dough from Whole Foods and used that instead.  My DH loved it!!  I'll be making this again.  Oh, and I didn't have green onion so I used a little brown onion.  Super yummy!!!  Baked for about 25 minutes.

I was not a fan of this recipe!! I mad the filling and ate it while it was cooking and that tasted good...but then after it came out of the oven it was sooo salty and my dough was tough. I know the dough was my fault but the saltiness was to much for me.

This was absolutely amazing. I cooked mine for 20 minutes and used Almond Cheese for the filling. I'm not sure why some one was saying it was too salty, I didn't find it salty at all! I used bac-os, so maybe it is something to do with the bacon-bits used? The sauce I used was as follows: 2 TBL veganaise + 1 tsp lemon juice + 1/4 tsp minced garlic (as opposed to ranch) so that could also have something to do with it. Seriously, try it with that sauce (using half the serving for each chick'n' bake). Not at all salty and completely delicious!

If you can't convince them, confuse them.

Very Yum!
I made them just like I was supposed to, except instead of adding my ranch to the filling, we used it as a dipping sauce......I'm not a fan of bacon bits, but they didn't really bother me in this recipe.  However, I do think I'll use some tempeh bacon strips next time instead.....
