French Drinking Chocolate

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    5 tablespoons cocoa powder
    2 teaspoons cornstarch
    1 cup water
    1 cup soy creamer
    4 tablespoons sugar
optional 1 teaspoon vanilla, almond, or orange extract

Directions:

Combine cocoa powder, cornstarch, sugar, and 1/2 cup warm water in a small saucepan to form a smooth paste.  Add remaining water and milk to the saucepan.

Warm  over medium high, stirring frequently, heat until mixture comes to a boil.  Remove from heat and add any extracts.  Enjoy!!

For a less rich version, substitute soy milk for creamer

Serves: 2

Preparation time: 5

Typo- Please use 2 tsp instead of 2 Tbsp cornstarch.  Sorry!

(note: recipe has been corrected!)

This was really good!  I added somewhere in between 2tsp and 2Tbsp cornstarch and it was just the right thickness.  Next time I plan to add a little alcohol to make it a dessert.

I really liked this!  The cornstarch really makes it a great consistency.  I made some changes to make it a little lighter:  vanilla soymilk, and half the amount of sugar + stevia.  I also used almond extract.  And topped it off with soy whip!  Thanks for the recipe.   Smiley

Wow, this was awesome and I totally managed to screw it up even....but it was super chocolate-y and oh so satisfying.  I accidentally added way too much cornstarch, so it was thick....like, eat with a spoon thick....but fab nonetheless!  I can't wait to make it again the right way!

Delish!  Seriously this is really good.  The cornflour gives it a rich velvety texture, that makes it taste like what I would imagine proper French hot chocolate would taste like! Oh la la!  Grin

PS I used soy milk as I've never heard of soy creamer in the UK and it was still great!

I made this the other night because I was really in the mood for some chocolate!  I used dark chocolate cocoa powder and it was heavenly.  Grin

I had it with a slice of leftover apple pie this evening. The texture and thickness are perfect, but make sure you stir enough, because I burnt some in the bottom of the pan. I added a half a teaspoon of mint extract, but it was too much. Perhaps a quarter a teaspoon would be better.

Wow! just finished my first cup. I used coffee instead of water seasoned with vanilla, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. go easy on the pepper. you want to know it's there but you don't want to taste it.

This will be my new bi- monthly treat.

When I lived in Notts, UK, we used to get Soy Dream in a uht carton at Tesco.  I think it was an Alpro/ Provamel product.  Looks like now they have 2 alternatives to single cream.
