Broiled Tofu

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1/4 cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon sweetener (maple syrup, sugar sub., etc.)
    2 teaspoons rice vinegar
    1 teaspoon roasted sesame oil
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
    1 teaspoon dried chives, parsley
    1 teaspoon cumin
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
1 block of extra-firm tofu, sliced into 1/2 inch slabs

Directions:

Preheat broiler.

Mix all of the ingredients minus the tofu until thoroughly combined. Dip each piece of tofu in mixture for 10 seconds.  Remove and set aside to marinate for 15-20 minutes.

Arrange tofu on cookie sheet and set under broiler until desired crispness. I like a little bit of charred edges as it adds a slightly smoky flavor.

Variation: Slice tofu into the shape of fries. Follow recipe. Turn down oven temperature to 375 and remove tofu from oven. Right when they come out of the oven and while still hot coat lightly with favorite BBQ sauce. Let sit for a few minutes -- think of this as a relaxing spa treatment for your tofu. Wink Place tofu back in oven until BBQ sauce has slightly caramelized. Good hot or cold. For a mind blowing treat shred vegan cheese over the top of these --AMAZING!!

Preparation time: 25 minutes

This was really good! I can't believe no one has tried this or reviewed this before. I made the tofu both ways--the regular broiled, and the BBQ edition. I have to say I preferred the regular broiled--I didn't find the BBQ sauce really added that much to it. It's an interesting mix of spices; at first I thought it might just be another pan-Asian flavor, but it was interesting and complex! Anyway, great recipe and I highly recommend it.

This was pretty good.  I think next time I will marinate the tofu for a bit longer.  It was very simple though...I had all the ingredients on hand and it didn't take long at all to prepare.
