Craving-Cure Cookies

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    1/4 cup other dry sweetener
    1/3 cup apple sauce
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    3/4 cup whole wheat flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
3/4 cup carob chips (or raisins, or something else you like)

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix sugars, apple sauce and vanilla.

In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, baking powder and salt, then stir into the wet mixture.

Add the oats and then the carob chips/raisins/whatever.

Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes in a 375F oven. =)

Once you add the oats and chips it gets very thick, so you can always add a bit more apple sauce or some water to get it to a better consistency. (I usually don't have to do this). They come out nice & soft! Usually about 20-24 cookies depending on how big I make them. Enjoy =)

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Oh so chewy, Oh so good!!!  Saw your recipes today and had to try it!   I know this one will be a keeper in my house!!!  I had to add a bit more applesauce, also added some crushed walnuts.  Thanks for passing this one on!   Cheesy

a good, standard recipe. i added a little more applesauce, used rolled instead of quick oats, used all brown sugar, subbed pumpkin pie spice for the cinnamon (was out  Shocked), and added 3/4 c of a mix of chocolate chips, walnut bits, and currants. craving cookies, right? the resulting cookie baked up nice and was tender/chewy. however, i felt something was missing. i might add a little nutbutter next time to give the dough a little more "something special".

i do like that these rely a lot on oats/ww flour AND don't have added oil-- that alone proves this tasty enough to warrant 5 stars. if you are looking for a more "junk foodie" cookie you might want to keep going. i gave it four stars, feeling somewhat mislead by the name of the cookie  Cheesy  while very good, they do taste healthy.

I just took these out of the oven, and they're pretty tasty!  Smiley I used all turbinado sugar, white flour, 3/4 cup of oats, 1/2 cup of chips, and a few handfuls of dried cherries. I baked them for 9 minutes, but they seemed too squishy so I  baked them for 3 more mins. and let them sit on the tray for a while. They came out nice and chewy, but maybe a little health-foody, like baypuppy said.

OMG...........to die for. I did change one thing & they still came out chewy and full throttle flavored. I use (Flexseed/H2O) instead of applesauce. A tad bit healthier. Yum Yum Yum..

Yum!  I used 3/4 cup brown sugar (perfect sweetness for us), 1/2 cup applesauce and added 1/2 cup golden raisins and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.  It made 25 Mrs. Fields'-sized cookies, 100 calories each, about 1.75 grams of fiber (was hoping for more!)  Mine didn't flatten out at all, so I flattened them with a spatula part way through baking.  Very yummy and filling.  Amazing that there's no oil/margarine.

EDIT:  Not sure what I was thinking when I said this made 25 cookies.  Last time it actually made 21 and today it made 20, which means based on 20 cookies, it comes out to 125 calories per cookie and 2.2 grams of fiber per cookie.
(If anyone cares  Undecided)

You can definitely tell it's a healthier cookie but it helps with your sweets cravings, just as the name of the cookie states... I will more than likely make these again but with unbleached flour, I know not as healthy but the whole wheat taste takes getting used to....

Thanks for posting this one!!!!!

i really like this. after having a kashi oatmeal chocolate chip cookie i'd been looking for a similar recipe. this was perfect, especially since it came out tasting like my mom's (nestle) chocolate chip cookies but kinda crunchier because of the oats, but when u get a chocolate chip it tastes just the same.

i didn't put any cinnamon in because i dont like cinnamon in my choc chip cookies.and i used 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup splenda, for the flour i used whole wheat and whole wheat pastry flour, cut the chocolate chips down to 1/2 cup. next time i might not put a whole 1/2 cup in cuz it seemed a lot.

if i'd known they weren't going to spread i would've shaped them. next time Smiley and i only got 12 small-ish cookies out of it. probably wouldve been bigger if i'd flattened them. thanks!!!

These cookies were sooo delicious. I used all brown sugar and added chopped walnuts, I can only imagine how good they are with carob chips! Very easy to make, will definitely make again! Wink

i know i already left a review but i have to say... u should call these crave-causing cookies.. the only reason i stopped eating them was because they were all gone! i'm trying to keep myself from making more. even my parents and boyfriend liked them, and they rarely even try the veg things i make

Yum! I also used a flax egg like one of the previous posters mentioned. This made the batter really dry though so I added some soymilk. They are delicious!  Grin

well, I made these again the other night when I was craving chocolate...this was the first recipe that came to mind, go figure.  They were delicious, but even having followed the recipe exactly, they turned out a bit drier than they did last time, when I made a cinnamon/spice batch.  hmph.  I think this recipe is just really particular when it comes to baking time....I tend to make my cookies pretty small, so 8 minutes might have actually been just one minute too long.

Oh, and you know how some food labels have that "summary" at the end of the ingredient list, like Contains: soy, wheat, milk...etc.?  and usually, they'll indicate that there's milk in it even if it's the tiniest, most far-removed bit of dairy, like casein or some such.  Somehow THIS particular bag of semisweet chips only said Contains: soy.  My eyes scanned the ingredient list, and cocoa butter and butteroil were right next to each other, and I didn't even notice until I'd already made the cookies!!
 Angry

So beware of butteroil!
/end rant.

To sum up:  this is a great, easy recipe for an all-purpose oatmeal cookie that can accommodate pretty much any mix-in you could possibly crave.  just don't overbake if you like them soft and chewy.
