Easy Peasy Sloppy Joes

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1 large white onion, chopped
    4 ribs of celery, chopped
1 small can of green chilies
    6 cloves of chopped/pressed garlic
    1 cup tomato sauce
    3 tablespoons tomato paste
    1/2 cup ketchup
4 teaspoons Tabasco (or other hot sauce)
2-3 teaspoons vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (like Annie's)
    1 cup textured soy protein

Directions:

Heat the oil in a deep skillet (one with a lid would be good) on low. When warm, saute the onions and celery until soft.  Add the garlic and green chilies and cook a few minutes longer.

Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until mixture bubbles. Turn to low and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Turn heat off.

Mix in textured soy protein and put the lid on. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to absorb liquid.

Serve on freshly toasted burger buns.

Serves: 6

Preparation time: 20 minutes

I make a similar version of these and add a teaspoon of fennel seeds. It livens up the taste...it's amazing!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is sooo awesome!  Grin I made some changes, due to lack of ingredients-  no celery or green chilies, no Worcestershire sauce , and only 4 cloves of garlic because 6 seemed like a lot. I also used only 1 instead of 4 teaspoons of Tabasco ( I use the green kind), just because I fear the spicy.   Wink But I think maybe another tsp would be good for me, because with the 1 tsp I can just barely taste it, but it does have a little kick. Definitely toast the buns, they're even better that way. I'm going to make this all the time! Thanks!

Oh, I totally forgot to say I added about 1 tablespoon sugar to the recipe. Smiley

Wow! I think there is a bit too much spicy-ness in this, at least for me.  I didn't change anything in the recipe and it was very very hot, but delicious nonetheless.

I love the peasy-ness. A lot.
When I make these, I will substitute tempeh or tofu for the tvp. Not as easy, but hopefully still peasy! Smiley

These were really good! Really spicy, but definitely good! I used tempeh in mine. Very yummy stuff.

This came out wonderful.  My husband never like sloppy joes before he was vegan so didn't want me to make this.  I always liked them so I made it for myself.  He really, really liked them and asked me to make them again.  Thank you for a great recipe.

I just thought I said that I did add water to make more sauce.  I also added a little BBQ because that is how my mom always made them.  I Love the flavor!!

mmm.sloppy joes. I had a bunch of tvp laying around, and this was a great way to use it up. modifications:
no green chilis, used 1 jalapeno instead
no celery
added 1 tsp. brown sugar
added little bit of bbq sauce
no tomato paste

They smell really good. I'm also adding some more water because it didn't seem like they would rehydrate the tvp thoroughly enough.
A+

Quite good, this one!  I didn't have chilies or worchestershire sauce but it still turned out yummy.  I think I'll use less ketchup next time, maybe use some BBQ sauce as suggested by the others because it tasted slightly overly ketchupy.

If i want to sub the tvp for tofu do I just crumble it into the mix when I'm supposed to add the TVP???

i would stick with using tvp or tempeh with this, and yes id just crumble the tempeh in.  can you find morningstar beef style crumbles?  they're pretty common & would be perfect for this & easier for you.   with tofu - i think unless you cook pretty much all the moisture out of it first, it would just turn into a saucy mushy mess if you just crumble it straight from the package.  (if i HAD to use tofu i'd probably slice it up, broil it and then chop it into tiny bits then add to the sauce.. i might even think about feezing/thawing it beforehand, too)
