The Pigs are Safe in the Barn

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

4 vegan "not dogs" (I use Smart Dogs)
    1/2 cup unbleached flour
    1 tablespoon corn meal
    1 tablespoon oil (any)
    1/2-1 teaspoon sugar (unrefined)
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    water (until dough formed)

Directions:

Mix together all ingredients except for the "not dogs" (well duh) until it is in a dough ball.

Next cut the "not dogs" in half.

Roll the dough out as thin as you would a tortilla and wrap the dough around your dogs.

Bake at 375 from 12-15 minutes until golden.

Serve with your favorite condiments.(I’m attempting Thai peanut sauce). Smiley

Serves: 2

Preparation time: quick

I gave up Morningstar Corndogs a long time ago (not vegan, WAY too many ingredients) even though I loved them. These were even better! And much healthier! It made the perfect amount for 8 halves of veggie dog. We dipped them in mustard-delish! And the name is awesome too!  I might try brushing them with a bit of oil or margarine next time so they will brown more.

Delicious and sooo cute. I whipped these up for an afternoon snack in fewer than 5 minutes prep time and just 12 or so minutes to bake!

Next time I think I'll add some seasonings to the dough to liven it up a bit - perhaps thyme, rosemary, garlic powder or onion flakes.

Great snack for young ones and the young at heart.

my friend made these (she doesn't cook!) and they turned out weird. i'm sure it was because of her and not the recipe. i think she added too much liquid. i will try these sometime... and maybe post a pic. we enjoyed them even though they looked really sad.

Bookpapa and I liked this a lot. I used Jumbo Smart Dogs, however, and had enough dough to cover only three dogs which I left whole since I was cooking these for a meal. Next time I'll eitiher use the regular size dogs or double the dough. I think I'll also use whole wheat pastry flour. They were, indeed, very quick and tasty. Baypuppy, sorry about the weird ones made by your friend. You ought to give these a second chance.

These were great! Don't add too much water like I did, add it a little at a time. I halved the recipe and added about 3 tablespoons, which was too much. I had to add more flour until the dough didn't stick to my hands anymore. Also, I only had white corn meal so I had to use that. Next time I think I'll brush some soymilk on them before baking so they get a nice glaze.

This was really quick and easy, which was great since I was out of hot dog rolls. I didn't even roll out the dough, I just sort of shabbily flattened it with my hands. Nice.

i love these!  they're easy and fun!
sometimes you just need those nostalgic treats!
they turned out beautifully, the dough stuck to the "not-dog" to make for a beautiful "barn"

Love these!
Used the Tofureky ones, and did not half them.
Also, spelt flour.
Fun and good.

This was great. I had two soydogs languishing in my freezer cos the package comes with 8, but hotdog rolls only come in packages of 6, and this solved the problem of what to do with those extra two. Plus, a lot cheaper than rolls!
Thanks for a good recipe.

I'm sorta nervous about trying soy dogs. These look really really good but I tried one brand of soy dogs and they made me gag, this was when I was new to vegan and even though my taste has changed a lot I've never tried them again. What is a good brand to try? Also do these go well with ketchup?

Very tasty! My mom used to make these when I was a kid with regular hot dogs. I used Smart Dogs and they were just as good as I remember... maybe better. My mom never used cornmeal, but it was very nice!

These were great. If you're not vegan, you can use Pillsbury roll dough and top with cheese.

caity123-- i used Smart Dogs, which were the only kind of vegan hot dogs I tried until recently. They're pretty good, and definitely go great with ketchup. Just a note that the texture gets chewy and the insides shrivel if you overcook them. I just tried Tofu Pups and they're good too (although I wish they were darker in color, they're really pale), I may like them better than the Smart Dogs, but I haven't tried them in this recipe. Also great with ketchup!
