Deep Fried Tofu

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 lb. of firm or very firm tofu
Cooking oil (corn works well, but lower-fat oils should work too)

Directions:

Place a large skillet over a HIGH flame.  Add enough oil to cover the pan to a 1/2 thickness.  Allow this to heat until very hot.  While it is heating, slice the tofu into strips (1/4 or thinner).  When the oil is hot, turn the heat down to medium.  VERY CAREFULLY place the tofu strips into the oil - it is VERY VERY HOT!!  I usually use a large spatula to put in 5 or 6 strips at once.  Allow the tofu to cook for 30 seconds or so, then flip it and allow it to cook for about another minute.  Continue flipping once every minute or so until the tofu is as cooked as you want it to be.  Remove and place on paper towels to drain out the oil.  Very crisp, VERY tasty...  Goes great on a bagel with vegan cream cheese and lettuce and tomato.  Also good for lots of other things.

Serves: Varies

Preparation time: 20 minutes

I'm just confused-- lower fat oils?  I thought all oils had 14 grams of fat per tablespoon and the only variant was the amount of saturated fat.

I like this recipe I fixed it and I really did not want to try it but I did I'm a newbie at this tofu stuff that is why I did not want to try it but I let my Husband try it and we think it taste like chicken.  We put it in a sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and two diff. types of cheese.  Thank you for the recipe Kimberly

It didn't really turn out as well as I had hoped. I wishe'd I had cut the tofu into thicker slices, because the thin ones just taste like burned tofu, but the thicker ones are much better. Also, I would have also pressed and frozen the tofu, for a meatier taste, since it does resemble freid chicken. Make sure you try to get the excess water out of the tofu before you fry it, otherwise you will burn yourself on splattering oil. Lastly, use some kind of seasoning, otherwise its pretty bland. I used OldBay on some of them and it worked well. But otherwise, it does have a nice taste, and works well in a chicken sandwhich.

Delicious! I cooked it with breading like you would with fried chicken...flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, curry, anything you like...really good. I prefered the tofu to be cut very thinly and didn't have a problem with it tasting burnt as did Chalupa.

i did as akimsey suggested cut this into thin pieces and breaded it with a flour and spice mixture. Im newly vegan and this was the first time ive ever prepared tofu. It was easy, excelllent and encouraged me to try tofu again.  i just dipped mine in a little homemade bar-b-que style sauce. Thanks so much.!!!

If you guys are new to cooking tofu - check out your local Asian market.  You will definitely want to keep some pressed tofu around the house.  It keeps forever in the freezer and is easy to thaw.  It's closer to the texture of seitan - you'll love it.
