Salisbury Tempeh

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    Gravy:
2 cups onion soup broth (2 tablespoon powder onion soup broth and 2 cups water)
    1 teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon basil
    1/2 teaspoon thyme
    1/2 teaspoon oregano
    1/4 teaspoon sea salt
    1/4 teaspoon garlic
    2 tablespoons margarine or oil
1 tablespoon tahini (sesame seed butter)
    pinch of raw sugar
    1/2 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons unrefined flour set aside for thickening
    Tempeh:
    multi-grain tempeh
    1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons Braggs Liquid Aminos or soy sauce
1 cup sliced button mushrooms lighty sprinkled with garlic

Directions:

Gravy: Set aside the 1/2 cup water and 2 Tbls flour (mix these together well) In sauce pan heat (on high medium) all other gravy ingrediants. When it starts to boil add slowly stirring well mixed 1/2 cup water and 2 Tbls water. Stir until thickens and set aside.

Tempeh:  Cut tempeh down the middle so it looks like you have 2 playing cards, then cut into 4 squares and then into triangles. Put 1/2 cup water and 2 Tbsp braggs or soy sauce in med fry pan. On med high heat, fry tempeh for 8 minutes on each side.  If the water evaporates before you turn the tempeh over, add 1/4 cup water more (do not add anymore braggs or soy sauce) at a time.  It is fine if the water is all gone at the end of the 16 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the pan 3 to 5 minutes before the last 8 minutes is up.  Mix them around a few times.

How I serve this dish: Put 2 pieces of tempeh on a plate and put some mushrooms on top and then drizzle gravy over them.  I make mashed potatoes and veggies to go with this meal.   Enjoy!!!

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 25 to 35 minutes

Please try this great recipe and if you like you can always use tofu instead of tempeh. Also, please do not mix the: Tempeh, 1/2 cup water, 2 tbls soy sauce and 1 cup water with the other gravy ingredients. If you have any questions about this recipe please e-mail me.

This is a fantastic meal!  Prepare with mashed potatoes and green beans and you have the perfect Midwest comfort food.

This is gooooood. I didn't have onion soup so I used onion granules, onion powder and veggie base cubes. I added lovage and celery too.

hmmm this sounds like an easy alternative to tofu turkey for thanksgiving.  with some mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce (and some veggies!) sounds like a hearty meal!

This gravy was really good, but it turns out that I don't like tempeh after all. I'd eat this gravy on mashed potatos and veggie burger patties, though. I'm going to crumble up the leftover tempeh and see if I can't hide it in a shepherds pie or something. The taste is fine, but I don't really like the texture. Great recipe, though! Tempeh just isn't to my taste.

This is amazing, especially considering that I don't really care for tempeh.  Better yet is the gravy, very versatile and incredibly delicious.  This meal is really easy too.  I made it for my vegan Thanksgiving meal and it was really a big hit amongst my family.!  Thanks for the recipe!

This is quite tasty!  Long story short, when I was done, I showed the plate to my kitty, and she went bonkers licking it.

Hi everyone.  I have been away for some time baking at a veg cafe in CA. but I just moved to Washington.  I am so glad that those who tried this dish liked it. You can always use other foods instead of tempeh like tofu or what ever you like.  I have new recipes to post soon but you can always look at my homepage.

OMG Made this tonight and it was way beyond awesome.  It's been forever since I've had Salisbury steak (which I'm not really complaining about, but the comfort thing I missed)  I may have used a bit too much pepper without realizing, but it came out VERY peppery.  If you're not big on that then lessen the amount a bit.  Other than that no complaints.  I will definitely be making this again and hope to have someone to enjoy it with me next time around.  It's worth sharing  Wink

Can't wait to try this recipe. Just a reminder. Worchestershire sauce is not vegan. Make sure you buy the vegan worchestershire sauce at your local health food store.

Cheesy I made this for dinner tonight, and wow was it good - especially the gravy.  Served it with home-made mashed potatoes and green beans, with some fresh-baked rye bread and red wine.  YUM!!!  I didn't have onion soup mix around, so I substituted a vegetable bullion cube.  I didn't have a lot of luck getting the tempeh to do anything using just water and soy sauce, so I put in a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and fried it in that (with some slices of sweet bell pepper, since I didn't have any mushrooms).  It browned a little and was very tasty.  The meal got an excellent review from my POSSSLQ too.  :-)  Thanks!

I tried this and I think I messed something up.  I saw it as a way of using up some of my ingredients from my non-vegan days so I used a package of Lipton onion soup mix and some of the worchestershire sauce that I have.  But something didn't come out right.  The tempeh had a good flavor though, but i used too much soy sauce.  I will have to try this one again and not mess it up.

Although this tasted nothing like salisbury steak it still was fabulous!  The gravy is the best vegan I have had!  And I think if it wasn't for me drowning the tempeh in it I don't think the tempeh would of had enough flavor.  Most definitely making this again.

I thought this was good.  The gravy was super fab!  My daughter took a bite of the tempeh and said "This tastes like meat!"...she doesn't like meat....

I loved everything about this recipe!  The gravy was awesome and I loved it with the tempeh.  I used vegan french onion soup as the base for my gravy and garden veggie tempeh.  I left out the worcestershire sauce (b/c I didn't have any).  I will cut back on the earth balance in the gravy next time though, maybe half margarine and half oil.  I made smashed garlic potatoes and kale for the sides.  Yum-yum!  Thumbs Up

This was pretty good.  While I've never been a huge "meat and gravy" girl, my husband loved it.  I did have to add a lot more flour to get the sauce to thicken up.  And I used a packet of onion soup mix instead of onion soup broth.....still came out yummy.

For some reason, the gravy didn't want to thicken for me, but it still all turned out really tasty. I followed the suggestion to serve it with mashed potatoes and green beans. The omni bf said it's one to make again. Thanks. :-)
