Korean Seasoned Potatoes

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 med potatoes
    2 tablespoon soy sauce
sweetener of your choice to equal 2 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon minced garlic
    2 teaspoon sesame seeds
1 To 2 teaspoon sesame oil
    4 tablespoon minced scallion

Directions:

In Korea, before the main dish is served a variety of appetizers is brought to you in little bowls.  Here is one of my favorites.

Peel potatoes and dice, placing in cold water to prevent browning.  Drain and place in saucepan with just enough water to barely cover potatoes.  Bring to boil and cook just until tender, 3 to 4 minutes.

Meanwhile, in bowl, combine soy sauce, sweetener, garlic, sesame seeds, sesame oil and scallion.  Drain cooked potatoes well and add to soy sauce mixture, tossing well.  Chill.  These are meant to be served cold.

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 20 min.

Hi Julia!  These are good!  My mother used to make them.  Howe'ver, she does add just a tad (~1/2 tsp) molasses to to marinade.  Thanks for the recipe though.

Served these tonight with Cashew Sesame Noodles, made a triple recipe and there was not a bite left, they were so delicious!

Julia...these are awesome.  My favorite part of going to the Korean restaurant in my neighborhood is the assortment of side dishes they bring....do you have any more recipes for them?  One I love is a very spicey cucumber one, then there's another one that I think is spinach or some other kind of bitter green in a sweet marinade.

OK, I've made this recipe even better.  Cut back on the soy sauce a little bit (1/2 tbls) and cut the vegan sugar in half (1 tsp).  The flavor is more delicate and delicious.

I ate these with a touch of hot sauce sprinkled over them to give them some kick.  Its a very good, flavorful recipe even without the hot sauce.  Oh, and I couldnt wait for it to cool so I ate it warm!

hey thanks for the recipie.  ...im living in korea right now and DYING!!!   this is NOT a country for vegans, since they love their meat, meat oil, or meat broth.  ...some how whenever i try to brave a restraunt and try to argue for something vegan (the response is, but how could that be delicious - to have the food made without meat) i have never gotten the potatoes.   ...but at least i know i will be able to get all the ingrediants for this recipe

jobie - have someone write a note in korean that says you are allergic to ALL meat, fish, dairy, etc. and that if you eat any you will get very sick, and maybe die. and have the people in restaurants read it. ok so its like, lying and all...but it should save you some time/explanations.

Jobie, in case you're living in Seoul (I don't know anything about the city and its size), thought you might appreciate this --- an all vegan bakery in DC called Sticky Fingers has a branch in Seoul -
http://www.stickyfingers.co.kr/ or www.stickyfingersbakery.com for English. If you are craving vegan baked goods, maybe you can check them out :-)
