Unsloppy Joes

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 27oz. can Hunts Classic Italian Garlic & Herb spaghetti sauce (The No Sugar Added kind)
    1 cup textured soy protein
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon Onion powder
    1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1 teaspoon vinegar
    3 dashes Mrs. Dash
    24 Zesta saltine crackers

Directions:

Pour sauce in sauce pan and start to cook at medium heat.  Add all ingredients except vegan crackers and stir well.  The textured soy protein will take about 5-10 minutes to absorb the sauce.  When it gets completely moist and has taken in most of the juice, crumble the vegan crackers and add them to the pan.  When you mix in the vegan crackers, the meal is finished.

What is Mrs.Dash? Is there an alternative?

This recipe is great!  Since I live alone,  I freeze the mixture in muffin tins, pop them out, put in buns, wrap individually, then store in a large bag in the freezer.  When I'm ready, I pop a sandwich in the microwave...presto...  ready to enjoy!  I like these in lunch my lunch at work.  For those who don't know, textured soy comes dehydrated.  When rehydrated, it has the appearance of browned, grouned m---.  It is best to rehydrate in a flavored liquid, such as in Unsloppy Joes or vegetable stock.  You can find textured soy protein in health food stores and usually less expensive at food co-ops.

what is mrs. dash?

Mrs. Dash is a brand name of several different salt free seasonings. Some are more spicey than others. the extra spicy is a blend of peppers (black, sweet, chili, cayenne), oregano, bay, marjoram, savory, thyme, coriander, mustard, garlic, tomato, paprika, orange peel, and oil of lemon .They are found in most american stores in the spice section.  A good substatute might be just alittle of any spices you might  like

Thanks Cliff.  I am in Australia, and hadn't been able to find Mrs. Dash, or anyone who knew what it was.

What would you suggest intead of the saltine vegan crackers?  I am on a low-salt diet.

How about unsalted saltines?  Anyway, this was pretty good.  Surprisingly meat like.  I couldnt find the hunts in unsalted so I got the regular, which has natural flavoring in the ingredients(which I didn't notice until after eating it of course) so I hope its not meat:(  Anyone know?

Grin Absolutely delicious!! The only problem I had is that it disappeared WAY too quickly.

For the sauce I used Classico Spicy Red Pepper and added about 8 cloves of garlic instead of the garlic powde. I also used Rosemary and Thyme flavored Z-Crackers from whole foods.

SO YUMMY! Thanks for the great recipe.
