Biscuits Like Mom Never Made

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 cups flour
    3 teaspoons baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon nutritional yeast flakes
1/3 cup non-hydrogenated vegan margarine, softened
3/4 cup soy or rice milk

Directions:

In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, nutritional yeast flakes and salt together.

With a fork, blend in margarine until mixture is crumbly.  Stir in milk until well blended.

Drop biscuit-size spoonfuls of dough onto a lightly greased baking sheet.

Bake at 450-degrees for 10 to 12 mins. until golden brown.  Serve hot.

Serves: 15 biscuits

Preparation time: 10 mins.

I madw these biscuits, but the dough seemed too sticky.  I added a little soymilk.  Should the recipe be altered, or is the dough supposed to be that sticky?

Made your biscuit recipe tonight with one small adjustment, used 2/3 cup of rice milk. They rolled out nicely, and I cut them and baked them like regular biscuits. My daughter said they didn't even taste vegan. I think next time I'll try to make dumplings with this recipe.

I made these using 2/3 cup of soy milk and I thought they were too dry.  I would think that 3/4 cup would be better.  Besides that they are wonderful and easy.  I think I will keep this as a base recipe as I further experiment with biscuits.  Thank you.

I make these biscuits at least once a week, either for dinner with soup/stew or for breakfast with jam!  My children (ages 3-1/2 and 18 mos) LOVE these.  I altered the recipe by using 1/2 wwpastry flour, and add a smidge more nutr. yeast. I like to impress my non-veg friends by making these, they're always a hit!

These are delicous.  I have found that if you make them with vanilla rice/soy milk, that they make a delicous fluffy scone, of course, only if you as raspberry jelly hahahahahahah

They are delicious. I will try them next time with chocolate pieces inside.

Excellent and very forgiving and easy recipe! Thanks so much, this will be a staple now.

This recipe is fabulous!!!  Its always a hit especially when I top the biscuits with a simple white gravy and soy sausage crumbles.  Vegan biscuits and gravy!!

Great recipe! I tried a variation by omitting the nutritional yeast flakes, adding a bit of vegan sugar (not too much) and chocolate chips. yummy! I also enjoy the regular recipe with chunky gravy.

Delicious! These were GREAT biscuits.  I made them for Thanksgiving and they got rave reviews.  I also used this recipe to make a pie crust for a veggie pot pie and that was VERY yummy. I just rolled the batter between two sheets of wax paper with some flour dusted on so it didn't stick, and it turned out WONDERFUL!

I added an extra half-teaspoon of nutritional yeast and a little more soy milk.  These biscuits are wonderful!

Wow! These biscuits are super-simple to make and really delicious! Thank you!

These biscuts are absolutely WONDERFUL and super simple to make. I'd been craving biscuits all day and these completely hit the spot. I definetly plan on using this recipe for dumplings the next time that I make soup.  Thanks!!

Good, I added more water and made drop biscuits instead!  Also I added a little sucanat to sweeten up the batter a touch.

I made vegan biscuits and sausage gravy, and this is such a great and easy recipe! So yummy! I ended up adding more soy milk, about 1 cup because the mix was too dry.

I made these for a Christmas dinner w/10 carnviores.  All of them liked them quite a lot, but felt they were more like biscotti than biscuits.  I think I may add a little more liquid and cook less than 10 minutes next time.

My kids loved these, the mix was very sticky and they have been nick-named the pokey biscuits.  These are sooo easy!  I started mixing the dry ingredients in a zip loc with the wet ingredients listed on the bag for extra easy assembly in a pinch (gotta do these things with kids, it makes my life sooo much easier)  Thanks for the recipe!

Could shredded cheese be placed within the batter to substitute the nutritional flakes? If not, what is a good substitute for the flakes?

Archived comment by: stride4unity
stride4unity-these biscuits would be fine omitting the nutritional yeast-I bet shredded soy cheese would be good though-I'd probably add herbs or garlic powder to make them savoury too

We had these biscuits last night (along with the Old Fashioned Potato Soup recipe from this site).  They were really great.  I didn't think they were going to work because the batter was so sticky but they were delicious.  They remind me of Bob Evans biscuits.  Thanks for sharing the recipe.

ive made these biscuits for about a year now and everyone seems to like them. i usually put in more nutritional yeast, 1 cup soy milk, less butter and some garlic salt and italian seasoning. a little bit of vegan parmesan cheese can be added as well if you like your biscuits cheesey. thank you for this recipe! (it goes very well with the super easy 4-ingredient gravy)

These turned out absolutely amazing!  I didn't change a thing to the recipe.  Light, fluffy,  very flavourful, and quick too!  Many thanks Smiley

These were pretty good, but I think next time I'm gonna add more Nutritional Yeast.  I did the whole spoonful thing, but I think they'd turn out better with slightly less water and rolled and cut.  I don't know why, but that way feels better.

I know what the problem was now.  I didn't take them out in time.  This time I took them out when the bottoms were golden brown.  The tops were still white, but they were nice and fluffy and cooked all the way through.  Very good.  I will have to stop overcooking my foods...

thank you for this recipe! i just made these & through some herby vegan gravy over em. sooo good.

These were great! I never imagined biscuits without butter could be so good, but these were probably the best I've ever made.

fluffy, soft, savory, and easy to make.  these biscuits are perfect!  my apartment is very dry and warm and the instructions you gave were perfect.  For those that find them too sticky, try rolling them on the side of the bowl with the spoon.  It took some working in, but the dough finally became smooth and pliable.  my husband couldnt stop eating them, hee hee.  added you to my recipe box.  thank you!

These are scrumptious.  I blobbed the dough on top of thick veggie stew to make a pot-pie - absolutely gorgeous.  Thanks!!

Archived comment by: poledragon
ok, i made these and they tasted good at first, but the after taste was AWFUL! it was extremely bitter, so much so that no one would eat the biscuits and we had to throw them all away. what went wrong?

Archived comment by: curiale
I made these over a month ago and forgot to comment.  I don't think I made any adjustments to the recipe, and they came out very good.  My boyfriend was craving biscuits and gravy, and he said these really liked these.  We ate them with Gimme Lean sausage gravy.  Curiale, I'm not sure what went wrong.  Maybe try cutting the baking powder?  Were you using a different flour or soy milk that might give an aftertaste?  Probably not, hmmmm...

Archived comment by: charlotte
Maybe boiling these would make dumplings? If anyone has tried, let me know Smiley thanks

These were super-easy and quick, and tasty, too! I always have the ingredients on hand, so I can whip up a batch whenever I'm craving biscuits. They're wonderful with soup or gravy, or even Earth Balance and jam. I love this recipe and will definitely be making it over and over again.

These are really good.  I used only whole wheat flour and they turned out well.  I never would have thought of adding nutritional yeast to a biscuit recipe, but it added just the right something.  I served these with sausage gravy (from this site) for breakfast and it was wonderful.  I just wish I would have made them bigger because I made them so small that they crumbled when I tried to cut them.  Still tasty smothered with gravy, though.

I had to get a ride to the store to get the baking powder, but it was well worth the effort. These biscuits turned out perfectly. I used 1 cp of soymilk instead of 3/4. I baked them for 13 minutes, and the tops were still white, but they were done. Excellent and easy recipe!

Oh- and I made bigger biscuits. Mine only made 7 instead of 15,

These were really good, and I wasn't expecting a whole lot. I subbed half the margarine for canola oil. They came out really good. I added a little bit of fresh rosemary to them which helped too, I think I might add more herbs next time and make them  a bit bigger. If you make the 15 as suggested they will be really small.
