Yep, our beloved Zooey is no longer vegan because she said something like it was too hard to get enough calories due to both soy and gluten allergies.
I was so excited to see she was on the cover of Health Magazine when I was at work... I read the article and was so bummed... Her sister is still vegan though

I'm so sorry her life is so hard that she can't possibly be vegan. To hell with trying and being responsible, even in the face of adversity. If regular people on limited budgets can make it work around their sensitivities, then I'm pretty sure she can too. Just be honest about it--"I'm too lazy, and I think it's not worth it." Not impressed.
And now that I've thought on this further, the phrase "lean meats" kind of pisses me off. It's another qualifier, like "grass-fed" or "free range" or whatever people are calling their happy meat to make them feel better about their choices. It like saying "yes, she eats meat, but it's 'lean,' so she's still pretty and feminine and worried about calories, like all women should be."
yes i agree with both of your posts... excuses excuses... life's hard, deal with it... and BTW your "lean meat" will still clog your arteries... as the vegan health video Eating said (something like)... "it's the animals revenge... a piece of them will remain in you forever" and eventually kill you!
I'm with you on the "lean meats" thing. I work as a weight loss coach too & it's one of my pet peeves when people think you can eat meat as a healthy choice. It's just not healthy, period.

ya lean meat is pretty much BS... still tons of cholesterol... people come up with soooooooooooooooo many excuses to consume carcass... i am glad that she didn't make a BS excuse (like total BS)... pure gluttony IMO... if ur living in fucking Africa... fine eat whatever... but to have so many choices (and being a CELEBRITY) there is s really no excuse for consuming animals: it's cruel and unnecessary

Although I'm struggling a bit on finances at the moment, I absolutely refuse to eat lower quality foods. We've given up a lot and we're getting second jobs, but I refuse to buy cheap crap to put in my mouth. If I were a celebrity (or just made tons of money), and I was too busy to make my own food, the first thing I would do is hire someone to cook for me. I don't care if I would have to give up my Lamborghini or whatever celebrities spend their millions on. I'd sacrifice to make the right choice, the vegan choice, so her lack of ingenuity is just annoying.

At one point I was homeless (after I graduated college & living in Hawaii) and STILL was selective about what I ate!! I managed to still eat healthy, vegan food because it was my #1 priority.
I think people just have varying degrees of how important it is to them. :)

I don't mean to make light of your situation or be offensive, but when I visited Hawaii I made the joke that if you have to be homeless, it might as well be in Hawaii! With the public beaches, the showers at the beaches, and the fruit growing all around, it seemed easier to live there than in NYC in the middle of the winter!
No offense at all...I was living large & it was a wonderful experience on many levels! I would never take it back. I learned so much!! In fact, I was living on a beach while homeless. Eating fruit. Making friends. Learning valuable life lessons. Good times.

I read this article over the weekend & I am also disappointed. I was trying not to pass judgment, but the more I think about it, the more irritated I become. While I sympathize with her food allergy issues & understand that it would be much harder to not be able to just eat any old vegan thing, I don't think that's really a valid excuse. Plenty of people with food allergies are vegan.
Though I would still disagree with her (obviously), I could respect it more if she would have just said, "I'm on the road a lot, and I'm too lazy to make sure I eat healthy vegan meals, so I decided that it's not worth it to me." At least that would have been honest. She's a celebrity with loads of money, the ability to have assistants, chefs, etc. - not to mention a vegan sister! - so I don't buy that her reason for leaving veganism was that it's "too hard."

I think that, had she come to VegWeb, she would still be vegan. She could have gotten suggestions and recipes that would help her stay vegan!
awww, this is sad :(. i loved that she was vegan, i thought she was a great representative of the vegan community...oh well.

As they like to say around here, "you've gotta have the want to." If you don't really want to do it, it is really easy to find a reason not too.
