Vegan Males -SOY- and Breasts!

I would love to hear from the vegan males on this board.  A friend of mine claims that she knew a lot of vegan guys (I don't even believe this much) in her old town that started to develop breasts. She went on and on about a lot of other things, but that is the short of it. First of all...who knows A LOT of vegan guys? She isn't even veg herself!

Then, my DH asks me tonight if I have heard about it being dangerous for males to drink soy milk for this same reason. Apparently his sister has a male vegan friend (whom has NEVER been talked about before, which I find strange since she knows I am vegan. You'd think she would have mentioned it) stopped drinking soymilk because he developed breasts.

I really think both of these girls have imaginary male friends with breasts but use them as examples just to make their stories more believable.

ANYWAY....do any of you vegan guys have breasts? Don't be afraid to say so....but I doubt any of you do. OR, does anyone know of any guys who drink soymilk and have breasts?

Sorry....I really don't believe this but want more info. thanks! :D

Oh, and my DH"s funny response was that he feels gyped (sp?) because he didn't get breasts and he wanted them so he could pleasure himself and not have to bother me!  ;D ;D :-D  He had already switched to rice milk before this big news story !!!

wait..but then wouldn't ladies' breasts get bigger also? my boobs certainly aren't any bigger since going vegan.  :P

this seems shady..i've heard of stuff about soy decreasing sperm count, but i think i read in vegnews that that's not true.

i've read that eating chicken or any other meat with hormones injected in (especially chicken, to make their breasts bigger for more meat, etc) can make men grow breasts but i have never heard of soymilk doing that....

They may well have male friends who have developed breasts but incidentally drink soymilk. Chronic drinking (of alcohol!) leads to decreased liver function and higher levels of estrogen. I forget the specific thingy-majig involved, but the liver produces something (enzyme?) that destroys estrogen, and when it can't produce as much, males become "feminized" - fat distribution changes, including the possibility of developing breasts, and voice pitch can even change.

I've known many male vegans, and none with boobies. All I know are quite thin to boot (so I'd notice the boobs if they were there!). My boyfriend has been drinking soymilk for... 6 years, and has not had an increase in boob-age. But, I think it would be worth more if a guy were a soymilk drinker throughout developmental years when secondary sex characteristics become more pronounced to have a verdict (though I really, really doubt that it would have any feminizing effects. Also, my boyfriend had been drinking it ages 15-21, but I think it would have to be younger boys if there is in fact any effect).

This old thing again?  ::) From what I hear, there are so many soy-derivatives in processed US foods anyway, I don't think soymilk/tofu would make much difference. If a guy's got moobs, I'd be more likely to ask how much excess poundage he's carrying in the first place. The only real moobs I've seen have been on guys who were seriously overweight.

As for soy=moobs, I think that's an urban legend. How many Japanese men are there out there that have them, not counting sumo wrestlers of course? Not too many.

Yeah, I think it's just anti-more soy propaganda *research* funded by the dairy industry as soy is milk's competitor now.
I find that a lot of these research studies funded by the special interest groups seem really skewed so they can prove their point, which is to scare people away from soy (or whatever it is)

This.  Soy is in everything anyway.  People don't realize that.

My husband isn't vegan, but he drinks at least 3 half gallons of soymilk per week, and the moobs don't seem to be an issue :)  I think that whole claim started because of the fact that components of soy mimic female estrogens (the same reason many believe soy products help to alleviate menopausal symptoms).  I don't know-I don't know much more about it than that, but my hubby has learned about the soy issue in his classes and he's the type to get overly-freaked about something like that if it even had the slightest probability of being true and yet he has no problem downing the soy products, so I assume there is no factual issue with boobs or lowered sperm count that could lead to infertility.

Not associated with soy, but there was this huge billboard on a busy street here for a while, and I LOVED it. It was just a huge white board, with MISSOULANOMOREMANBOOBS.COM in black.  ;D

the only thing I have heard is that is causes a lower sperm count, not sure how true it is.

To clarify about the soy estrogens: they are WEAK plant estrogens. Mammalian estrogen (like what gets secreted into cows' milk) acts much more strongly on human estrogen receptors  than those in soy do.

But, male-bodied people still have estrogen in their bodies - male sex hormones like testosterone can't cross the blood-brain barrier to act on the brain, so it gets converted to estrogen. So when people make reference to things like the Weston A Price foundation, which claims soy is to blame for men being gay, developing breasts etc. I can't help but laugh...any doctor should know that men already have estrogen in their bodies (and obviously that estrogen doesn't determine one's sexual orientation...what about queer women? come on.)

But yeah. the breast thing is a crock, I think.

I'm glad you mentioned this...I never understand why people are always so worried about plant estrogens yet they have no problem ingesting gallons and gallons of milk from mother cow (who has lots of estrogen too).

I was so mad at my friend, who was having this conversation with me AT A VEGETARIAN restaurant, IN FRONT OF MY VEGAN SON and telling me that cow's milk is good and soy milk is bad, blah blah blah.  She also once wore a full length fur coat to a vegan restaurant in Asheville. That takes nerve. Why can't I have more vegan friends???!!!! (who live nearby?)

I and HATE that both she and my SIL made up "male vegan friends"  to strengthen their cases. I have never heard names mentioned or heard these MOOBY guys talked about in any other scenario. WTF!!

Not so much nerve, as major-league stupidity and insensitivity. Also, in some places, a death-wish.

This entire thread made me laugh.

L2A, Your friends is not very considerate.  Your son is young and impressionable...that was so rude.  I am sure having you for a mom he knows what is what. ;)b  He probably thought she was nuts too huh?

My husband is not vegan but lactose intolerant and drinks loads of soy milk, occasionally soy cheese and tofu...no man boobs.

My mom is Japanese.  My uncles and grandfather from her side all eat tofu daily.  When my mom would cook for us, dinner would usually have tofu one way or another.  So my brothers grew up eathing lots of soy.  No guys in my family have moobs.  All us girls in my family are in the Itty-Bitty-Titty-Committy as well.  At the time when we were trying to have a baby, my hubby was drinking soy, and was eating tofu, and we conceived in a week.  So there goes the low sperm count theory.
