Vegan couple in the headlines for murder.

The "vegan couple" part  caught my eye. It is very upsetting story because the baby did die. :-[ The news clip is only about 1 minute.  I don't think what they did has anything to do with being vegan so I wish they would have left that part out of the headline.

I hope someone who is not familiar with what a vegan is doesn't watch this and make any assumptions about vegans. It must be a very upsetting time for the grandmother. If they couldn't afford food I wish they would have gotten help, although I don't know if that is what the problem was.

Apparently all they fed their six week old baby was soy milk and apple juice, which is irresponsible, vegan or not. It has more to do with ignorance than veganism. And of course this is gonna give veganism a bad name. It is so important to educate people on healthy starts which include breastmilk, ideally, or formula if breastfeeding is not an option. It is to bad they connected the veganism to the story, because there are obviously other issues at play here.

My sentiments exactly, healthymomma.

That is very strange.  There was no food in any of the cupboards and there was only one baby bottle?  I definitely think something else was going on here as well.  :-\

yes, these people are not "vegan" parents!
no food, anywhere in there kitcvhen, and, the quantiity of soymilk and apple juice they gave their child was way to little.
again, nothing to do with veganism...lots of kids have allerigies and need soy instead of dairy (formula)
besides, them being vegan is irrelevant, it's not like they'd give the baby a steak and milkshake at this age anyway

I just don't like the way it keeps getting reported as a "vegan" problem as opposed to a "parent" problem. The fact that they were vegan means nothing. They just starved the baby to death. When other Omni Idiots that should not be allowed to breed starve their child, or throw it in a dumpster, the headlines don't read: "Omni Parents Starve Baby" and go on to tell about their dietary beliefs.
Read my post on this with the link to the Atlanta Journal Constitution to see the new great comments from some of the people here in Georgia! >:(

I honestly wonder if these people were really vegan, or if they just throught they could use it as an excuse fortheir poor parenting.  I think they wanted the prosecuters to villanize the diet and not them- they were just ignorant to the affects of the malnorishing vegan diet, they were simply led astray.  Thanks a lot guys!

I feel so horrible for that baby... this is way, way, beyond "poor parenting."  They seem insane - who doesn't keep any food in the fridge or cupboards? (....not even for themselves?...) or ask for help when their child is obviously starving to death?

The whole vegan angle makes me really mad  >:(  I've been reading a few blogs, and there are some really really anti-vegan comments made in regards to this whole incident.  People who actually believe that veganism had anything to do with it (although you do have a lot of people saying that the parents were just bad parents and their diet had nothing to do with it...)

Just out of curiosity (and this might seem like a dumb question, but I don't have any kids), can you feed a baby cow's milk (not formula, just cow's milk from the regular containers in the grocery?).  Because if you can't, this emphasis on the parents' dietary choices is SO misplaced.

I think most if not all of the people who are anti vegan are simply ignorant.  I agree that this couple are using their veganism, if they even are vegan, to excuse their abuse and murder of their baby.

Yep, here is a blog I randomly stopped on.

He is pretty anti-vegan and blaming it on the death.

We knew this would happen. :(

"can you feed a baby cow's milk"

You probably can and the baby would survive, but it would be a horrible idea. For one cow's milk wouldn't be digested well at all. My grandmother either couldn't or didn't breast feed my mother so they gave her goat's milk (formula was too expensive and not readily available back then).

When this story first surfaced the media reported them as supplementing the baby's diet with cod liver oil. So they are not vegan. They are not even vegetarian.
