SciFi !!!

I've never been much of a fan of scifi.  It's not something I'd read, although I did like A Wrinkle in Time in the fourth grade, and that's scifi (right?).  So, I'm now addicted to Torchwood (Jack + Ianto = caliente).

I'm watching the new Dr. Who because the character Jack was introduced in that show before the spinoff.  I'm completely out of my element here.  What other good scifi shows are out there?

OK--I'm totally going to porclaim my expertise hre on sci-fi. I love sci-fi, watch it all the time!

Best sci-fi ever that you MUST watch: Firefly! the little show that could, written by Joss Weadon, this cancled show had such a massive fan base that a full length major film with theatrical release was made! You can grab the complete series for less that $20 bucks on Amazon or Target!! Watch the show then the movie "Serenity". You will be sooooo hooked to this show you won't know what to do! This show has a unique premise of western meets sci-fi, edge of the world, massive power vs. the everyday man--so freaking great! Plus, there are som HOT guys in this show!!

Next on the awesome list--Battle Star Galacitca (new show)--Sadly I do not have cable and have not been able to see any of the new episodes, but I have seen the first 3 (?) seasons and they are out of this world good! The characcters, dialogue and effects makes this show rock out hard core--it's one of those shows you will be on the edge of your seat for--and when each episode ends you will want to scream or tare your hair out because you want to know what's going to happen next!!! BSG is a little pricier to buy--but you can always rent it--or do what I do and see if your library has copies of the series!!! There are also some online webisodes between some of the seasons!!!

Those two are the heavy hitters in my book but of course there is a ton of other great sci-fi you might be interested it!

Star Trek--how can I not talk about Star Trek? It's not everybodies cup of tea--but I can highly reccomend Deep Space Nine--this 7 season series followes The Next Generation--and it is a bred of it's own! It has major character development and fantastic dialogue!!! Plus they stray heavily away from the notion that the federation is the end all be all of civilizations and opens the doors to other, highly developed cultures!
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/TS4_2006/ds9.jpg

Star Gate SG1 and Atlantis--OK, in my opinion, Start gate is not that impressive--but, what it does is always gives you true to the genere sci-fi! You got aliens, space ships, time travel, mysterious worlds and a weekly crisis or two--it's like the frozen dinners of sci-fi, its not the best but it will feed you! A lot of other sci-fi actors end up on this show too! So it's always fun to see your fav sci-fi actors take on a new character here--it's like a half way house for sci-fi actors out of work!

The 3300--this show is quarky! But I like it! The premise is over the last 80 years 3300 people have vanished without a trace and then all at once they are returned. Some ome back different and develop special abilities--this show plays out kind of like X-Files with a duo-team investigating cases surrounding the returnees--great story line develops about the 3300 Foundation! The epidsodes are not terribly original--but they are good! This show got canceled during the writers strike--but there ae several seasons available!

X-Files--well I mentioned it above, so I better say something now. Great show, good dialogue--untill all the writers quit after Chris Carter (creator) took all the credit for the writing and story lines--great show up untill the 5 season or so! David Ducoveny is hot and watching him look good is an easy task!

OK--I would love to post some more (and I proably will) but I have to go to school! ope this helps for now!!

Oh wait!!!! I just remembered an oldie but a goodie!

Twin Peaks! You have to watch Twin Peaks--who did kill Laura Palmer?? Well watch and you will find out and it is freaky!  This small town has more secerts than a burried city! Plus David Ducoveny shows up in drag and Billy Zane is in like 4 episodes and he is hella hot. Seriously--watch Twin Peaks--watch it!!!

I'm a big Firefly and X-files fan. I watched Twin Peaks while it was on also now that was a crazy show. I can't wait for the xfiles movie to come out next week. I really miss firefly. I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan. Luckily he's got a new show coming out with Eliza Dushku called Dollhouse.

I am also a fan of SciFi, but unfortunately, since I don't have cable, I only have limited exposure to it.  My favorite is Star Trek TNG.

Not to mention the coolest looking ship:

Guinan was awesome in the show, too, she is my all time favorite character:

But I also like Star Trek Voyager:

I watched Star Trek DSN a few times, never could get into it.  There was something about the show I didn't like, though I couldn't tell you exactly what it is.  And I don't really care for the Original Series either because I can't stand Captain Kirk, I just want to smack him, and all the women are always half dressed.

But I also love Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantas.  If I ever catch either of those two shows on TV I will watch them.  But unfortunately, not having cable, I am kind of limited on how much SciFi I can watch. :'(

I think you meant to say The 4400.  I love that show and have it DVD.  And yeah, totally, who doesn't love Star Trek?!  I like them all except the original series.  Captain Kirk...Make    me      barf!  Picard will always be the love of my life. :)>>>

I was counting on your expertise, Capture!

I do watch BSG, because co-workers watch it and it's something to discuss.  You can keep up with BSG on the scifi website.  They post the last three shows there.  http://www.scifi.com/rewind/

Oops! Yes---that is what I meant--sorry!

SnowQueen I totally have to disagree with you on Voyager--it is Star Trek blasphmey and should never ever ever be considered part of the franchise--I have so much hate for Voyager my words can not even express it! *not a personal strike on you--just the shitty cast and writing that is Voyager*

Farscape!

okay, i know you're all referencing shows and stuff, BUT there some totally amazing written sci-fi works too!

Philip K. Dick: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.  inspiration for the movie, "Blade Runner."  you'll read it in like, a day.  a few hours!  nonstop action, tons of fun reality questioning.

Ray Bradbury: The Martian Chronicles.  c'mon, people, they're short stories!  even if you don't like to read, it's not like you have to read all of them!  even though you totally will want to because they rule.

Ursula Le Guin: The Left Hand of Darkness.  now we're gettin' trippy.  seriously.  crazy, intellectual science fiction.  gender, culture, etc.

H. G. Wells: The Time Machine.  a classic!  so fun, so many concepts - i mean, isn't that part of what science fiction is about?

but PS i completely loved Twin Peaks.  in a weird and obsessive way.  i even read The Diary of Laura Palmer.  listened to the soundtrack religiously.  sported my laura palmer t-shirt for years.  i think i wanted to live in their fuzzy world for quite some time!

I took a class called International Science Fiction and it was great, though outside of film sci fi doesn't interest me much. If anyone is interested in a different sort of sci-fi film, I recommend Jean Luc Godard's "Alphaville."

Yeah! Twin Peaks is the shit!

I love reading sci-fi fantasy too! I am particularly found of the DS9 relaunch books--they are exceptional! and for fantasy I reccomend Mercede Lackeys "Valgarth" or "Valdamer" series (same series--just tomato tamato kind of thing)These books are great--I highly reccommend reading them chronologically though!

I agree with the Firefly and BG praise.  I also have to give a shout out to John Carpenter's "They Live".  Cheesy but highly entertaining!  I just watched it yesterday and it was as good as I remembered.  ;)b

Hey Savvy!!! I haven't seen you in a million years!!! HI! HI! HI!

HH--You need to remove Voyager off the "good" list and put it in the "should have never exisited list" (IMO  :P )

Another vote for Ray Bradbury, particularly All Summer in a Day.

Also love Douglas Adams (especially the Hitchiker Trilogy) and Madeline L'Engle (DH got me the Time Quartet a few years ago.)

You can not have a sci fi book list without including Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.  Read that, than read the parallel book Ender's Shadow.
