Modern Marvels

So, I'm watching this show Modern Marvels on the History channel and this episode is about the making of Butterball Turkeys. I am not sure, but from what I have seen here, this thing appears to be one boneless turkey wrapped in another boneless turkey... They're showing this whole process and then the narrator is like, "When we come back, we'll take a look at one of the strangest turkeys on the shelf, Tofurky!" Yeah... Tofurky is way stranger than these Butterball things!

LOL!  Those peculiar to-fur-keys.  Stranger than fiction!

what is strange about NON-DEATH?

really, i dont' understand people hate'n on my tofurky

People don't like what they don't understand. Or in this case, what they don't know the first thing about. The old herd mentality: "If it's different it's gotta be bad!"

I saw that episode last night. Every once in a while my wife and I will watch stuff like that to help remind us why we don't eat meat. I was thrilled when the Tofurky segment came on. They actually gave it a pretty decent treatment, just showing how it's made. I don't recall them saying anything critical about it at all. Their "strange" comment was just meant to indicat "unusual" I think.

The bologna and liverwurst segments were really gross.

This talk of beer brat tofurkeys has me interested.....not for me but this may be what I need to convert a couple omnis I know  :) Can you buy them, or does it invole buying a tofurkey band bratwurst and cooking it in beer?

The kielbasa and Italian sausage versions of Tofurky are good too. I cut the Italian sausage into little slices and brown them up with onions and olive oil. Then add a jar of good tomato sauce and simmer for a while. Last thing I do is add 1/4 cup of nutritional yeast (for a vodka sauce taste) and then serve over linguine. Yum.

kbone, how is the tofurky made?

just wondering.... wa ha ha!

They start with tofu and something else (i don't remember what) and make a thin liquid base. They then add wheat gluten and some spices and flavorings (the guy wouldn't say what). It makes a doughy paste that looks similar to uncooked seitan dough. I think at that time they put it in some kind of casing and then cooked it at a low heat for a long time. Slice, package, sell to a vegan.

My memory of the show is a little shaky. I was drinking some wine that night.  :o

yep, you can buy them already beer-ed up... it's just another flavor of their 'sausages' called "beer brats": http://tofurky.com/products/sausages.htm

this just reminded me at a "health food store" around my parents house they have a "but a needy family a turkey" thing.
I would have bought someone something else... but there is no way i am paying for someone else to eat turkey. why didn't they ahve other options?
