Hooray for the good people in California

Now if the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act gets voted into law, there will actually be happier :cow: :pig: :chicken:  in California.  At least for a bit until they are murdered!  A giant step in the right direction, though!  ;)b

That's great news!!! In general I think we can all agree that actory farms just need to go in general--but removing the strict confinement will at least provide a small measure of comfort. Hopefully it will pass and other states will make this move too!

yeah, i was the volunteer coordinator in my county for this. i think it is a good thing for obvious reasons, but i'm still sort of afraid that if it passes it will just give people a guilt free pass to eat their meat....
maybe i am just paranoid... i am definitely glad it got on the ballot, though! it will bring the issues to peoples attention.

Yes, it is a step in the right direction hopefully.  Maybe it will cause the price of meat and animal products to go up as it will be more expensive to "farm" them and people will eat less, too.  (Although right now we ALL pay for meat with our tax dollars since the gov't subsidizes the meat and dairy industries, but not fruits and veggie growers, so it could still cost us all until we bring change.  >:(  )

haha. yeah, when i was out getting signatures this was a 'concern' of a lot of people.
i was thinking/sometimes saying: would you rather pay from it with your $$ or health?

i mean, even if you aren't interested in being veg or care about the animals you HAVE to see that having the animals in close quarters or in tiny cages has been tremendously detrimental to safety of the food.

it was seriously disheartening sometimes being out there and hearing the things people would respond with. once, i had a guys who said he didn't care how the animals were treated because he believes that god put them on earth for us to eat.
i, being the nice person that i (usually) am, didn't say anything because i knew he wouldn't budge. i think in that case he was just looking for a reaction out of me because he stood there for a minute afterwards and said "is that it?"... i said "yeah, if your not going to sign i'm not going to waste anymore time talking to you"

i really have my doubts about this passing, especially since there is so many people are tied to the meat industry in Ca... in addition, they wouldn't start fining the people who don't comply until 2013, i believe...

Even if it doesn't pass, at least it was proposed and people got a chance to sign the petition and get it on the ballot.  Here in Texas, it would never even have been proposed.  Texas = cattle industry so hell will freeze over before I get a chance to sign such a petition or vote on preventing cruelty to farmed animals.  People here just refuse to even think of animals as sentient beings.  DH won't move to California and now that his dad has passed, he doesn't want to move back to Arizona so I'm stuck in Texas for the rest of his life and mine, too.  Oh, and 2013 is just five years away, the factory farm industry will probably say that's not enough time to revamp their industry.  >:(
