Good For San Francisco, No more plastic bags!

San Francisco voted to ban non- biodegradable plastic bags used by supermarkets, drug stores and other large retailers. This should be the law of the land. Not just here in the states, but in every country.

There are so many better options. They look at me like I am "evil" for bringing my own bags to my local super market. Really! :o

Hello to all. I have been using canvas bag for to many years to count. It's about time the started banning the plastic.

I believe that a place in Manitoba became the first in Canada. there is a place in B.C too that did or is about to. i could have the provinces backwards but thats not really the point. i guess dog owners are going to have to find a new way scoop the poop

Cheers

I wish my town would impose a tax on plastic bags. Or at least a town or city in Michigan.

I bought a bag set off of reusablebags.com. They're a bit pricey, but if it gets my husband to use them, great. I felt a bit awkward using them for the first few weeks, but I finally sucked it up and went through a Meijer checkout lane with them. Low and behold, they actually knock five cents per bag off of your total bill. They don't advertise this at all - I used their comment form on their website once to say that they should give people a discount for bringing in their own grocery bags and I received an auto reply that said something about their school recycling program. Go figure.
I've since made it a point to tell everyone I know that Meijer offers bring-your-own-bag discounts.  ;D

Thanks for sharing that Issaspiders!  I also live in Michigan.  When I head out to WF or Trader Joes, I do not feel weird about bringing in my own bags...  But at Meijers I have not tried that yet.  I think I will start bringing in my bags there...

Thanks for that tip!  ;D

don't feel weird guys!!!!!!!  :)
When you see people glancing at you from the next checkout they aren't thinking "what a treehugging weirdo!!"
They are thinking, "Hey! Neat bags...."
or "Wow, I admire her/him"
or "I wish I could plan my shopping THAT well"
or even, "Hey, I have bags just like those! Maybe I'll bring my own bags next time too." (they might even overhear you discussing how cool it is that you get $ off your groceries for bring them!)

So next time you see someone looking at you with the "Are those her own bags?" look, you just look back over and give them a great big SMILE and show they how cool and happy you are plastic bag free!  :D Becuz chances are they're wishing they had made the same choice

I chose bright red bags for that exact purpose, so they couldn't be missed. And I really don't mind if they think i AM a 'tree hugging hippy'.  ;)

the grocery store here even offers dry ice for $1 for those who have a long ways to go. Anybody else heard of that?

I agree!

Not long ago I was at Whole Foods filling our many canvas bags and the lady in the line to the left of me commented  (as she put her groceries in plastic bags) that she had some canvas ones at home and just never remembered to bring them. Maybe she went home, dragged them out, and put them in her car. I like to think she did, anyway.  :)

tanevab,
do the one bag at a time bags stand up on their own? ie they have a paper bag shap, not a tote bag shape, right?
I'm on the waiting list to get some! I'm gonna use them as gift bags too! i think it's a great idea!

"happy birthday! here's your gift, oh and look it's in this neat reusable grocery bag that you can also use now! 2 gifts in one!"

i think both the krogers here are selling the canvas bags again. when krogers was within walking distance my dad bought a few and we would walk up with them to get whatever. i think next time i see one i will ask my mom to get one so that i wont have to use her bag that has a old lady cartoon with the saying of my little get out of the way chicken legs or ill whack you over the head tote bag. either that or ill keep her bag until i have enough money to get a few from http://www.cafepress.com with my own pics/saying. i used to have a messenger bag from them with a pic from the tribe series 4 but lost it b/c of zack. i used it to keep my hoody and a few other things in it when i was working at mcdonalds.

Yes they stand up on their own like a paper bag would. When I first got them I thought they seemed flimsier that canvas but I have used them and abused them w/ no problems.

I always think that I need to bring in less bags then I need and end up way overstuffing them. The bagers always look at me like 'why don't you just use some of ours?' but I refuse.
