Fast Food Nation: The Movie

My hubby and I have in hand the movie version of FFN from NetFlix. I understand there is a slaughterhouse scene somewhere at the end. Can someone tell me at what point it occurs so I can skip that part--or will it be obvious that it's getting ready to come up? I know of the horrors of slaughterhouses and don't care to actually see them.
the whole movie is about working class kids working in a fast food resteraunt and immigrants working in a slaughter house. there are images of the slaughter house throughout the whole movie.
The whole movie is disturbing -- but yes, there is a more graphic scene near the end showing cows entering the "kill" room. I think it's around the last 15-20min of the film. You will know when it's approaching -- I'm pretty sure the person is told they are being led there.
The worst scene is on the 'kill floor' at the very end. The directors give you a little notice. DH and I watched this two nights ago and really wished we hadn't.
So if I make my omnivore DH watch it with me, do you think it'll help or hinder his conversion to vegetarianism? It's on my netflix queue also but I wanted to read the book first before I move it to the top of the queue. BTW, yesterday for lunch, he opted for a bean and egg burrito instead of a hamburger so progress is being made!

i'm not sure about that. my omni boyfriend and i watched it last saturday, and when it was over i asked him what he thought and he said he could go for a burger. it made him think about all that stuff, but it didn't stop him from going home and having a steak for dinner ::)

I'm a bit afraid that if I push too hard that he'll eat more meat just out of defiance. He tends to react passive/aggressively instead of just telling me to back off! I don't want to undo the progress he's made so I think I'll wait a while longer!
Well, rats. I have read the book--it was wonderful--but I could sort of skim over the more distressing parts if I felt the need to. I'm not sure I'm going to be "up" for the movie. I'll have my hubby scope it out for me. Thanks for the input.
the movie really wasn't that bad. it had to do more with the people that worked in that business, i think. there were a lot of scenes that felt like i was in school watching class-mates act out stuff to educate us--kinda boring and i found myself thinking "people don't have conversations like that".
sure, there were parts where they showed the conveyer belts where the people cut up the meat but it really focused on the fact that these companies are hiring illegals who don't have the skills to be doing the job (leading to contaminated meat) and the politics of it all.

Yeah, the movie really focuses on the human rights aspects of the book, the labor abuses etc. There's not much about the animals. It might "convert" a person who feels really strongly about labor politics or immigrant rights, but it's not going to make anyone rethink their burger b/c of the animals, I don't think. It's not really trying to do that. Actually, I'm really sensitive to slaughterhouse footage and I had no problem with any part of the movie except the final walk through the kill floor at the very end. You'll know it's coming, so just shut your eyes. I don't know why I didn't... It was kind of awful. :(
i think watching things like that even if youre aware of them, is a good reminder about what goes on in todays world and helps to reaffirm peoples beleifs and stances
nothing wrong with being upset and angry, it helps motivate people to do good things
too many people have their head in the sand about all the bullshit that goes on
I saw FFN less than 3 weeks ago. It was not overly graphic, but it really got the message of cruelty and unhealthful practices across. It put in pictures what I read in John Robbins book last Summer.....and I knew that the reality was much, much worse, and so widespread. When I read "Diet for a New America" it was just too overwhelming and I put that knowlege someplace out of sight. This movie put it back into my field of vision.
I have not eaten meat for 2 weeks.
And I made the commitment to eat a whole foods based vegetarian diet. I had done a lot of reading, etc....but this movie was the trigger that made me decide to look at the animal protein recommendations of health gurus like Mercola and Weston Price critically.....look at the China Diet results again......and choose veggie! FFN made it inescapably clear that the meat we choose to eat has horribly negative and painful impact on both the animals and the workers.

I have not seen the movie and will must likely not. for no other reason the my DVD player is broke and my computer is running windows 98 ( it dose everything i need and was free). I have read the book and is a great read even you don't eat fast food or meat or dairy or eggs. If any one that reads this and has not read it you should read it. lots of good info on many different subjects in the wonderful world of food.
