You are here

animal abuse as "art"

so i saw this on facebook today, if you have a facebook profile you can see it here:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=26898570848&ref=nf

if not, here's just one of the many articles on the subject:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Artist-Leaves-Dog-To-Die-on-Exhibition-Display-82091.shtml

it's very disturbing and saddening. if you're making another creature suffer, it's not called art...it's called torture.  :'(

That is horrific. I signed, and invited all of my friends.

I thought this came up before & it turned out he fed the dog at night & eventually let the dog go & just told everyone it died.

Even if this was the case, isn't it horrific that people came day in and day out, saw the dog, knew what was going on, and yet didn't report it?  It's bad enough that one individual would think this was an acceptable project, but that tons of people visiting the gallery also seemed to approve, or at least not disapprove.

y'know i'm getting really sick of all these people using the "art" excuse to do horrible and unethical shit. pardon my language but it's really pissing me off. there's this, then some girl at Yale or somethin that supposedly gave herself multiple abortions and video taped it all and is displaying the videos and the blood as "art", then some guy at another college performing oral sex and defecating on someone and calling it "art"

enough is enough!

oop i didn't know it had already come up...i just started posting/looking at the forum so i'm not up to speed on these things.  :) i just read about it so i haven't heard if he actually let the dog go or if it died. guess i'll have to do some research on it.

omg i heard about the abortion "art" too! even if it wasn't gross, it's kind of an abuse of rights. not to mention what effect that could have on your body.
i don't know, maybe they have to resort to the shock factor since they're not creative?

I saw this a few days ago and contacted PETA to find out what they are doing. This was their response to my queery.....

Thank you for contacting PETA about Guillermo Habacuc Vargas.

This "artist" apparently won an award for this display at a contest in Nicaragua , where there are no laws protecting stray animals like this poor dog. According to most reports, the dog was a very sick stray who was captured and put on display, and died a couple days later.

Recent reports (which we have not yet been able to verify) indicate that this may have been a hoax and that the dog was fed, watered, and released. In any case, it appears that Mujeres in en el Arte, the organization responsible for the next "show," this one in Honduras in November 2008, will not allow any animal to be mistreated. We have one of our experienced caseworkers monitoring this case and we will step in if we determine that Vargas plans to abuse another animal. Otherwise, we have decided that any additional info on this will just give Vargas publicity, which we have reason to believe he wants regardless of whether it is good or bad.

People often commit heinous acts in a bid to gain attention, so it is important to refrain from encouraging them by providing the attention they clearly crave. Thanks again for writing and for everything you do for animals—your letters and actions save lives!
