I had a dream I thought of a really good suggestion for VW and everyone was like 'OMG that's such a good suggestion I can't beleive no-one has thought of that before, we must have that right now' and webmistress realised that my idea was so good she made the changes straight away.

obviously I now have no idea what my amazing suggestion was

I'd totally be up for helping rearrange recipes.  I'm sometimes browsing them and come across a recipe in an obviously wrong place.  Also, I'd like the recipes to be double posted if they are equally strong contenders for mutiple categories.  Although the work around may be being able to search by ingredient.  Or make all of the special events recipes duplicates and have those recipes in normal categories, too.

I read the comment about gluten-free recipes.  We do get a steady flow of people on the forum asking about gluten-free recipes.  That isn't a bad idea.  I'm not sure how many recipes would be added to it, but I know it's an area of interest.

It's really annoying to be looking for a recipe and come across something that reads like "1 can sauce, 1 pkg burger crumbles, 1 pkg veggie mix, 1 jar salsa" etc.  I think most of us are smart enough to open some cans and throw a dinner together and don't need a recipe to tell us what order to combine the canned/frozen food.

;D  ::) I'm probably not now.  And I definitely wasn't that smart during college.

The ability to "tag" the recipes would allow us to put them in multiple categories without double posting them or doing a massive rearrangement project.  Users could simply add whatever tags they thought appropriate.  Then the same recipe could be found whether you're browsing under "Indian" or "Gluten Free" or "Cauliflower" etc.  It would be good to have a list of tags to choose from, for consistency's sake.

This may be a big ask, but I would like it if recipes which include packaged, processed, brand-name 'ingredients' could have those changed to generic types of product - wherever possible -, since not all of us have access to any/all brands. :)

Yeah that bugs me too heli - also when recipes say '1 package frozen spinach' or similar - how the hell do I know what size you mean, there may be a standard size where you are, but not where I am!!

*end rant*

i agree with heli and shelliod, but isn't it actually in the directions to NOT put in brand names and the like?
personally, my favorite is when they say what it is and then say "i use ________", that helps because every so often i don't know what they are talking about from the product name alone.

yeah, it is in the directions not to put brand names, but lots of people still do it - grrrr! That's my response, grrr!

Brand names as examples is all cool, and I've seen them used that way. But it'd be nice if the original item were described in a generic manner, with a quantity/size if possible, like shelloid suggests. :)

I would like to see Vegnews arranging for treats and food and funtimes when we come to San Francisco.

Wait.....what?

After I started using VW regularly for recipes I went out and bought measuring cups and a proper set of teaspoons/tablesspoons - cups as a measurement are not really used in the UK.
I made a few recipes that went really wrong because I didn't know the measurement of a cup.  I tried subbing a specific weight before I realised that this was not the right idea.
I love my measuring cups now, but they really piss N off for some reason.

Yeah, we're definitely working on conversion stuff and standardizing recipes! I got so caught up in fixing ones that I'm stumbled across that I haven't gotten to add as many new recipes as I'd like! Ahhh!

Awesome suggestions! Please keep 'em coming!

Wow, thanks Laura.  Already hard at work fixing things up.  We appreciate it.

i'd like to get notices about my picture comments and have some sort of notice that is viewable to me to show where these comments are (like on myspace)*.  i NEVER know when i have picture comments unless i go through all of them individually.

also, i haven't figured out what the difference is between adding someone as a buddy and not adding someone as a buddy.  i've searched to see if there's a buddy list somewhere and i cannot find one.

*such as an alert when i go to my picture page that says "new comments" above the pictures that have new comments.

If you go to your profile, then click on your photo gallery, then click "photo comments" along the top bar, you'll see all the comments.

As far as I know, the buddy option is only pertinent to the blogs. Buddies can see "buddy only" blogs. I think that's all. Your buddies also have bolded names.

Agreed! I'd say even an email notification (like Facebook) saying, "So-and-so has commented on one of your pictures. Click here to see the comment." Or something like that... Or if it's too difficult to set up an auto-notification on picture comments, maybe something like what RD said about notifications when you sign on to say "You have 2 new picture comments" or something.

This might already exist, but sometimes I can't remember which recipe I have made in the past, and the way I go about finding out is to scroll through my posts to find the review I posted. In that light, it would be nice if when we click on 'show recent posts' there could be a breakdown between 'show recent recipe reviews' and 'show recent forum posts' ... or  maybe that's just me, and i need to learn to write down my recipes in a more secure place!
