Thanks!!

The search thing is the main thing with me. Searching within certain boards, or recipe categories (say i have silken tofu and want a dessert but dont know what type)
And possibly making recipes in more than one category? They could pick up to 3 categories matbe? (so it doesnt get out of hand, where the same recipe is everywhere.) Like, if some one has a quick and easy tofu recipe, it can also go under tofu, and chicken (in meat subs).

Are there any sites with forums that you like the look and usablity of?

I don't mind the look of vw at all (I'm quite familiar with it...), but I do LOVE how ppk is mod..ded? Moderated?
Anyway, spam/flame/bait/etc. posts are immediately removed, and the thread is locked/removed. No drama or whining or anything like that, it's just done. I really like that.

Hi! I just mentioned a suggestion to AC about something earlier this week, but I think that this is definitely a better place to mention it:

The review threads are fabulous, and I'd love to see them organized and formalized somehow. We could still have a page with a topic, but rather than having every review listed together (which gets really overwhelming to read) we might be able to click on a link (say, a brand name) to expand to the actual reviews that fall under that brand name. I think my exact word that I used with AC was "wiki." It should definitely still be user-driven its content, and however it is set up needs to be user-friendly enough that we can all still contribute to it. But I think it would just be a lot easier to digest.

...this might be wayyy more than you had in mind, but heck, since you're asking... :)

- i agree with ac that i like the look of vw. i actually find ppk really ugly. i think since ppk has more moderators it is easy for them to get on stuff like that, but i don't know if i like the way the board is run more. i think no matter what you have to think about how tiny vw is in comparison to ppk. we usually end up handling our own crap pretty easily.
-yes, search does need to be fixed. and search w/in threads would definitely be handy.
-i disagree that we should make more boards. i looved vw when it only had one board. i hate surfing between them and i don't really think that it would be that advantageous to have more, but i could be convinced otherwise.
-i think in terms of the forums being more prevalent it's kind of a win some/lose some deal. we used to have a tab that said "forum" which was nice (for new veggies with questions, etc. though, i must say, i have often found newbies in chat asking questions before), but it also brings a lot more crap to the forums. it will definitely bring more traffic, but most of it fly-by posters (we used to have them all of the time).

this isn't really a request for change but a question: will there ever be deals for a lifetime membership to the site again? i had a membership for a year and i miss it. i really want to get one for life, though. i know this isn't the place to put this. or maybe it is.

i'll still try to keep thinkin'. ooor just comment on other people's thoughts.

I agree that the look of the site is fine. When websites change layouts and looks it scares me.. heh.

oh wow, these are all really good ideas!

I agree with what has been said about:
-strictness in modding/dealing with rule breaking
-a formal structure for review threads
-everything about search

As far as the structure in terms of threads, organization:  I do think a more detailed breakdown is needed.  BUT that should not be nesting forums with forums.  I fight it a pain in the butt that the Eating Out and Cookbook sections are all hidden within the food section--when the colors on the folders indicate new posts, I don't know which of those sections is new.  I think the more categories you can display on the initial forum page, the better.

A section for adult/body topics is a good idea--I know that has caused some discomfort while others of us really value those sections.

A good example is theppk.  They have different "rooms"--living room for things related to entertainment, kitchen for food things, a separate section for food p0rn, a bathroom for body/sex things, a parlor for political/debate, one room for chitchat, etc.  You get the idea.  Not that we want to copy, but I think that is a good inspiration/model.  We could have different names for the different rooms that we come with on our own--we could even vote/have a contest for it.  That might be fun.

And since we like Iron Chef competitions, an area for that too.  Like "The Arena."  ;D

It never occurred to me that it could be difficult to navigate because everything is so familiar.  But yeah, if you look at other forums, the thread breakdown is SO specific, and also very visible.

id like to have the ability to fix my typos in other peoples posts when they quote me.

that way when i spell "acts" as "acks" people won't see it...    ::)

hahaha!

For a while last year, we were able to modify/update our own recipes. I loved that feature oh, so much. Then it went away. I wish it would come back. Because sometimes you think of a way to make a recipe better, or clearer, especially after someone's asked a question in the reviews, and you go "Oops! you're so right!" You know? ;)b

Along these lines, I would love to be able to modify recipe reviews.

i don't know if this has been fixed or not, but i've lost SO MANY recipes on here.  i would spend so long typing them out and then when i submitted them i got a message saying it would show up eventually after being reviewed.  then it just goes away forever... probably in the same land that steals all of my left socks.

i have mostly given up on submitting recipes.

i agree... an adult section might be good for those topics that some people get a little miffed over.

just today i read one that was a pretty valid conversation and it's a question that  i, as a vegan, get asked all of the time (even my DAD asked me) but it bordered on the adult discussion side and some people might have preferred for it to be in a separate forum with a disclaimer.

i, personally, don't care for censorship... but, i'm not the only one using the site.

maybe i way to rank difficulty of the recipe?  like, "easy"/"beginner", "advanced", etc.

The Post Punk Kitchen is the website of Isa Chandra Moskovitz, the author of several vegan cookbooks, and a TV show(?). They have some major active forums. I love their food porn board. :>

I've only recently begun to lurk/read/post there. It's kinda big and scary. VegWeb will always be home. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it's just more comfy here (despite the occasional outbreak of trolliness).

i actually like that we don't have a rating system like that - i think that it scares some people off from trying something new they might not have tried otherwise.  im pretty sure that by reading the recipes' directions people can figure out if it's a recipe they can handle/want to attempt.

I like the idea of having the option to pick more than one category for a recipe (or maybe a 'cross reference'?). IE: I have a HUGE head of cabbage, and looking for recipes to use it, I go to the 'cabbage' section, yet can still miss TONS of recipes that even have cabbage in the title because they are in different sections (cabbage soup in 'soups', cabbage salad in 'salads', etc).

I'd also like to have more options for 'diet-types' in the profile section. I there have been many who've come on as true 'omnis' yet the only selections we have to choose are veg*n types. I'm a life long Pescatarian, and I feel like a wolf in sheep's clothing having to select 'lacto-ovo'.

As for having an 'adult' section to the forums....I'm 'meh' about it. Unless it has changed from when I started, it was clearly stated as being an 'adult' site/forum (as in have to be an 'adult'/over 18)....I'm of the belief if you're not 'adult' enough to be able stay away from topics that can in'flame' you, then you don't really have any business being a part of such a community.
