HELP! HEARTBURN WHILE PREGNENT!

Last pregnancy I got heartburn really badly but was able to drink organic goat milk which (along with taking gaviscon) helped.

This time heartburn hasn't been as bad which could be to do with the fact that this time I'm a vegan not just a vegetarian but now I couldn't resort to milk even if I wanted to do as I just bring it striaght back up again and hate taking lots of medicine - does anybody have any natural remedies?

Thanks for any help you can give

:-)

Try eating almonds. That really helped me.
I had horrible heartburn, and I was vegan the whole time.
It is because your organs are very pushed together and your digestive system is probably sitting higher.

Good Luck!

I think I had this same exact thread when I was pregnant. I will see if I can find it and see what others said!

have you tried rice/soy milk? I had heartburn for awhile and it was uncomfortable, proping the pillows up in bed helped me as well.  hopefully you feel better soon

I'm going through this too at night.  Propping myself up is helping.  Sometimes eating a little banana calms it too.

Thank you!  I think I'm going to try a banana milk shake with almond before bed!  wish me luck and keep the ideas coming :-D

The last month or so of my pregnany I had acid reflux really, really bad due to the way the baby was sitting.  I did sometimes have to resort to some medication some nights to prevent asthma flares.  I don't think there is an easy answer.  Very frequent, very small meals seemed to help some.

yes, try to sleep on a bit of an incline if you can!

Oh, I hated that! It did not matter WHAT I ate...it gave me heartburn.
I can't find my old thread for some reason. But almonds did work best (suggested by hoopy~d)

Papaya enzyme - it saved me in 2 pregnancies!

NLveganmama has right with the papaya enzyme.. I had terrible heart burn in the last couple of months of my pregnancy and it helped me much more than anything else I tried... plus you can eat a ton of them as appose to the 6 tums a day limit or whatnot...

I'd never heard of papaya enzyme but just looked it up and it is not only on sale but also everything in the shop is 'buy one get one half price' so I think a wee trip to the shops is in order.
I am going to try the almonds as well.  My little girl has recently been ill with a sickness bug and in hospital as at the moment I'm totally wiped out and can't figure out if I'm ill and have a virus or just so tired that my body is kind of giving out on me so haven't had time to try anything suggested.  I have got almonds in the cupboard at least so going to snack on them today.  Thanks for all your help :-D

I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl, the poor darling!!!! Its tiring enough just being pregnant, I'm sure you're exhausted!  I hope she gets better soon!

Try chewing on some fennel seeds. It can really work wonders. Also, some Yogi Stomach Ease tea can help with reflux. Ginger tea may or may not help - sometimes it helped my reflux, sometimes it made it worse.

Just to let everyone know i've tried more of the suggestions now - the papaya enzyme had a really fast but not too long lasting affect, I'd read mixed reports online about taking them while pregnant so didn't want to take too many in the day.  I had really great results by making a soya milkshake with banana and ground almonds, I had this while eating quite a hot thai curry and no reflux at all so I'm really pleased.
Another set back for me now, I have CFS and when I went to the hospital with my little girl I was just getting over a virus and so got another one and then just as that seemed to be easing I got the sickness virus my daughter had.  The doctors do think it's my M.E - I'm supposed to be very careful when I'm ill, which since I've had the vegan diet hasn't happened often, I can't remember the last time I had back to back illness.  The doctors at least aren't fobbing me off and I'm having blood tests on Monday just to make sure there isn't something nasty lingering that we're just saying is the M.E.
I'm hoping I'll get to post again in a weeks time to say  'everybody is all better now!!'  :>
