Freebirth, or unassisted birth, is delivering without the help (or presence) of a medical professional..

Without the assistance of a medical person?  Isn't that like using a midwife or a doula?

Not alone is it?  No way in holy hell would I ever want to go through what I went through ALONE!

But if it was a person who had delivered babies before but wasnt' necessarilly from a medical background, that I don't think I would mind.  In fact, I was thinking that next time, if I ever had another kid, I would probably want to do natural  home birth rather then in a stinkin hospital.  I hated the hospital, they had too many rules, too many shots, they took my baby away as soon as he was out and didn't give him back for like 10 minutes, looking back I am really pissed about that!  I wanted to nurse him on my bare belly as soon as he was born but that didn't happen!

But I nursed him as soon as they gave him to  me though.

I think a home birth would have been better.

I've considered it.  Direct-entry midwives are illegal in my state, and there are only a couple of certified nurse midwives in the entire metro area who will do a homebirth but they are too far away from me.  I absolutely detest the idea of a hospital birth and I feel so strongly that child birth isn't a medical procedure that requires doctor intervention for it to happen correctly.

However, my problem is this.  My husband and I both have fertility issues that effectively negate the possibility of conceiving naturally.  We are going to a fertility specialist and will require medical intervention.  I am also considered high risk because of advanced maternal age (I'll be 35) so I will likely be monitored closely.  I don't know that I could even find a midwife who would take me on even if they were legal here.  So my options are free-birth with my husband delivering or a hospital delivery.  I just don't know.

At this point, I just want to get pregnant.  I'm not going to worry about the rest yet.

I support the idea, its the way most women birth around the world.  That being said, I am glad I birthed at a hospital, if I hadn't my son would have died, and I might have as well.  The doctors were there and when we needed intensive intervention they got him out fast.  I feel bad for those who had negative hospital births, ours was long, and then scary for  a while, but the doctors were nothing but reassuring.

It would be wonderful, but I think a lot of women might need/want support during labor and birth at least for the first one.  If the woman feels comfortable and capable giving birth unassisted then it's her right to do so.

I don't know if I've said this before, but I had planned on having a homebirth.  When I started to go into labor I bled so much that my midwife recommended I go to the hospital emergency.  I ended up laboring all day there and had to have a csection due to the stress on my daughter's heart.  The cord was wrapped around her neck twice.  The hospital and surgical experience was awful, but I am glad to have my daughter safe and sound.  Things happen we don't always plan for...However, if I were to have another child I'd definitely try for another homebirth.  Midwife care and just being able to be home is much more comfortable and satisfying for the birth experience than the hospital.

I had 2 c-sections in Holland where the c-section rate is 7%, so I know it's a good thing that I didn't try to birth alone. Midwives are common in Holland. You only go to a gynocologist when you have complications like I did. My first daughter weighed 11 pounds 11 ounces after being nearly 3 weeks late. She never would have come out on her own. With my 2nd daughter, I had a bleeding complication from the 5th month onwards and had to deliver at 36 weeks, because I started to go into labor. If I had delivered her vaginally, I would have bled to death. I still lost 1.5 liters of blood during the delivery.

I support any woman's right to choose what type of delivery they would like to have, but it's best to be prepared just in case you do have complications.

Hey, I'm new to this board (and newly veg too, if that matters...) I've had 3 homebirths, one of which was a UC, one with an extremely hands off midwife. Just wanted to say "Hey!"  ;)
