mmm lara bars

I searched & couldn't find much on this...does anyone make their own lara-type bars? I love them (especially the jocalat ones!) but can't dish out two bucks apiece. any tips?

kbuette made some hella awesome ones for me in an exchange once.  It was cinnamon-y.

I made them once, but they almost burned out my food processor because it was so thick.  I just got cashews and cranberries and maybe something else.  I blended the cashews first and added fruit until it was about the right proportion of nut to fruit and thick and then formed bars.

I buy them on amazon. If you use the Subscribe & Save feature, they are about 1.19 each. The subscribe & save can be canceled anytime with the click of a mouse, so I use it a lot for things to get the cheaper price and then immediately cancel.

I make something close--I call them Capture's Apple Nom Nom cookies--they remind me of the apple lara bars with out the dates--I have the recipe posted on my blog--I think it's under the "Raw Preparations" blog! There is a picture too :) hope that helps!!! (blogs are located under the vegfriends tab...)

just use dates plus any kind of nut/flavours. the dates make it all stick.

hespy, did you like the ones that i sent you?

tino, i suggest the following:

1. move the the US (albany, perhaps) where you can get them for like $1 US (so what is that CA? i haven't been in CA for a couple years).

2. they are all basically nuts and dates and other stuff. SOAK a mess of dates in water so they get really soft. this will make it easier to make the bars. then put them in a food processor and blend them down (they will be soft and "melt" pretty much). add raw nuts/seeds and chop to get a dough-y thing going. when it seems right, press into a pan and let them set up. i usually put mine in my dehydrator to dry the outsides/get them firm.

not sure about the chocolate ones. i had one once, but don't remember what they use. cocoa powder isn't raw (usually, i'm pretty sure). carob perhaps? just put some chocolate chips in there. that makes everything better.

I didn't soak my dates.  Maybe that's why I nearly broke my processor.

soaking is the magic trick. i once "forgot" about some i soaked (i keep them in the fridge so they get pretty hard) and they got soft enough they fell apart. those made some kickass bars.

thanks for the tips. BP, I think the chocolate ones have cocoa in them and it's the only non-raw ingredient. As well as things like the mint extract or orange extract.

I'll have to get some dates (hah, puns) and try this sometime. mmmm.

according to their site, the chocolate ones are only 90% raw.

i wonder if i have any dates in my fridge. DR and i have been on a prune (or, as they say now "dried plum") kick. i want to make some now.

heh, so I realized. one day when I visit your fair(?) state, (wherever that may be at the time), you can show me how to make larabars. Some would call it a date date. as for other things....we'll see. ;)

pink: thanks for being my bp translator. I think I can take it from here ;) haha
