Oh. I thought for sure this was spam. My mistake. I thought Japanese people naturally had dead-straight hair. Shows how much I don't know.

Japanese hair straightening is a type of straightening system to make your hair pin straight like Japanese hair. There's other types of nationality based straightening systems as well. The best way to find out if it is vegan is to call up the salon and ask them what's in the product that they use. If you want to double check the ingredients and whether or not the company tests on animals, you can ask them for the name of the product and look it up online or call the company.

do not get your hair chemically straightened!!! i just did this and half of my hair fell out and now i have extensions again :/

whatt?!?! so sorry aml! i got it done when i was in middle/high school and it fucking fried my hair to a crisp. and it was noticable. i had to cut it really short to semi get rid of the split ends.

Yeah, out of curiousity I did some research online and it basically says that if you want it done right, you have to pay upwards of 800 bucks (as much as 1500) to get someone who knows what they're doing, and they should analyze your hair first to see if you're a candidate, as not all Western hair is. (And I quote the word "Western".)
I still don't know if it's vegan or not, but I definitely think that it's way too expensive and too risky.

If you are vegan/ vegetarian I would suggest not getting it done... I think the consistency of your hair changes when you are veg (as my extension friend said)... Mine has been and always will be thin and delicate vegan or not... I used a non veg product to get mine straightened, keratin straightened, it was only like $150 (I canceled the check)... Karma's a bitch ain't she?! The extensions were $600 :(

Yes, I had it done before. And, it worked really well for me. And, yes, I got it for a very good price. I was wary of it because it was so relatively inexpensive, but my friend who had very similar hair to mine had her hair straightened at the same place with good results so I went there. My hair is still straightened good enough for now (I had it done in June). But in a few more months, it will be fully grown out. I think I might embrace my curls. Or I may visit home and check out the products this lady uses.

My sister works at a hair salon - she had her hair Japanese-straightened when she was in school. It came out just fine (her school was very meticulous about safe, high-quality products, since they were used on their own students!) but a word of warning: it is VERY effective, and VERY permanent. It took her eighteen months to grow it all out, and during that time the straightened hair wouldn't take any kind of curl or crimp or wave, even with product. The new hair, on the other hand, was her natural slightly wavy texture, so it looked a little weird when it was growing out and she spent a lot of time heat-straightening the top of her head.
The term Japanese straightening is a little like the Brazilian blowout trend; it's more of a technique than a specific kind of product. Some places use stuff that won't harm you or your hair in the least, and are probably only slightly destructive to the environment... others will happily pour ammonia and aldehydes on your head. Price is a pretty good indicator. At my sister's salon, the two procedures run between $500-$1000. At school, it was cheaper (because of the students doing it) but the percent markdown was less than for other services, i.e. the materials themselves are what's expensive.
Because different salons use different formulations, there's no way to say for sure whether YOUR salon is vegan or not; you'll have to ask... if they know, that is. It's likely they may not have asked every single ingredient in the formulation or its origin. And they may not disclose that info to you even if they do know. But you'll gave to ask, yourself.

i think wherever i got this shit done it was def not vegan... it's been 2 months and my hair is still insanely fucked up and tangley, i hope this doesn't last 18 months!!!
