EARTH BALANCE and SMART BALANCE?

okay so I know Earth Balance is vegan, but I found this stuff called Smart Balance (bought it on accident 'cause I didn't remember the name of the other one)

it says "lactose free - non dairy, and gluten free" but it has natural and artificial flavors, lactic acid, and vitamin A palminate

does anyone know if it is vegan?

i also found popcorn made by Smart Balance, and it has natural and artificial flavors but it also says that it's derived from lactose free milk, so does that mean real milk?

smart balance lightis vegan. regular smart balance is not. either throw it away, give it away, or be resourceful and use it anyways. bluebonnet light is also vegan.

your "vegname" is really cute btw :)

There are two versions of smart balance light, too.  You have to make sure it says dairy free somewhere on it

I didn't know BlueBonnet light was also vegan. Thanks, Prettyin_Punk. :)

I was having some Earth Balance on some bread today and I read the nutritional label...11 grams of fat!  :o  Does Smart Balance light have that much?  Anyone know?

The Smart Balance Organic one has the exact same ingredients as EB and says 100% vegan on it. ITs the same company that makes both. I  might even like the SB better!

I think someone on this site has said that Blue Bonnet Light is NOT vegan.  I can't remember why though.

Deuceo, Smart Balance Light only has 5 g fat and 45 calories to EBs 11g and 100 calories.  But, I think EB tastes SOOOO much better...and SBL is apparently not good for baking.

i don't think that the popcorn is vegan, it doesn't say butter as an ingredient but "lactose free milk" sounds pretty non vegan to me.  it's like saying that lactaid milk is vegan just because the lactose was taken out... like the commercial says "it's still real milk"  (or something like that..)

smart balance isn't vegan. it has whey in it. And microwave popcorns are not vegan because it says "natural butter flavor," which means it's extracted from butter. Read ingredients on things before buying them.

the smart balance light with the flax in it says vegan on the side.

I put plain popcorn kernels in a paper bag, fold the top, and microwave. Then i put it in a bowl and I add my own butter.  It's cheaper and more fun.  Plus you can re-use the bag.  Just keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn!

hespedal is right. Smart Balance Light is okay if you only use a very small amount in a recipe. I would never bake a recipe with 100% Smart Balance Light as the non-dairy margarine ingredient. It has that weird, chemical aftertaste that some diet foods or sugars have.

Agreed.. and because it is light it doesn't have the same fat content as normal butter or margarine would have so it will make the recipe turn out different than the expected results. I used it for frosting in a pinch last year and it was yuck, yuck, yuck!! But as far as on toast or in something where you don't need the fat content to make the recipe work out, i've had no issues with it :) I am a die-hard EB fan though

I don't like the smart balance light at all.  I melted some for my pop corn and it turned a weird neon yellow and made it taste funny.

You've read EVERY box of microwave popcorn on earth to be able to make this statement with confidence? There are many microwave popcorns that are vegan, but yes, you do need to read the ingredients to figure out which ones. (I prefer popping popcorn in a pot, so I just buy kernels)
