Daiya Cheese Retail!
I am so psyched! I bought Daiya cheddar and mozzarella "cheese" shreds at my Whole Foods. I tried the mozzarella on a roasted veggie sandwhich and it was really delicious. It didn't taste as bland as dairy mozzarella so I'm really looking forward to trying it on a pizza and I will update as I try things!
oh man, when i first saw this thread i thought it said "Daiya Cheese Recall!"
I haven't seen it in retail packaging yet. Is there is a price difference?
I paid $4.39 at Whole Foods. Tried the mozzarella on pizza and it was pretty good. I like cheese-less pizza, so don't really need this. I also bought the cheddar style, but haven't tried it yet...
try it in grilled cheese!! soooooo good!!
just bought a small container of the cheddar from the Whole Foods at UCLA (they FINALLY got it!!) and put it on a big ass salad. DELICIOUS.
I LOVE DAIYA. It won't replace my nooch....but makes an AMAZING quesadilla.
I love it. I just got it from my local health food store and am still just amazed at how much i like it. i figured i would think it was ok and not the greatest thing ever, but i am very happy with it. it really made my tofu scramble.
I envy you guys.
Only way I could get some daiya is to order it online. Maybe I can talk to the owner of the health food store I frequent into getting some in stock. What's the best flavor? :)
i really love them both. but i got more use out of the cheddar flavor because it's really good in grilled cheeses, quesadillas, broccoli and cheddar soup, etc. i used the mozzarella for a pizza but that was pretty much it. after that i just used it on salads. but if you could get them to carry both, then that would be doubley as awesome!
so far i have made pizza( children ate like 6 of them), mostacholli(2 big pans that they demolished), and I have used it on cheesy baked potatos which was a huge hit as well. I have tried both from the local whole foods store for4.39 a bag. we shop there so much they let us try the first bag for free! ask about the try before you buy for those of you who havent tried it and dont have money to waste.
I also found it at my Whole Foods for 4.39. Still a bit pricy, I think, but good for the occasional treat. They were out of mozarrella, so I can only speak for the cheddar flavor.
The first time I tried it was on a nachos-esque snack, and I wasn't too impressed. But then I melted some into a batch of scrambled tofu--WOW! It was exactly that melty cheese texture I was after and there was no obvious off taste. It's a keeper, that's for sure.
After experimenting a little with the cheddar flavor, I have come to like it. It is good melted in rice and beans. I'll have to try the mozzarella again but it has taken me 4 months to finish off the cheddar.
I agree that the cheddar is excellent is quesadillas. I made a lasagna the other night and mixed the Daiya mozz with Follow Your Heart mozz, and it seemed like the right blend. I think the Daiya mozz is a little goat-cheese like, which I 'm not a huge fan of, but mixed with the FYH, it toned it down a bit. The next night I used the cheddar in another lasagna (the first was for a potluck and disappeared!!), and that was exceptionally delicious as well. Again, I mixed it with shredded FYH. I'm especially excited about Daiya because it's not soy. Just can get a bit ODed on soy sometimes.
It finally made it to my tiny local HFS. I have been looking for it for months but wasn't expecting it. I thought I was seeing things. I bought a package of each. Now I just need to decide what to do with it. I wanted pizza, but without AC I won't be using my oven for a few more months. I'm so excited.
I just made and quesidilla with the cheddar style. Every melting vegan cheese I have ever tried melts down to a watery/greasy sauce. Daiya actually melts and keeps its thick consistency like real cheese does. It also stretches somewhat like real cheese. I think that if someone wasn't aware it was vegan, they would notice the difference in the way it stretches, but I can. When the streched portion breaks, it immediately retracts, which diary cheese doesn't do. As far as the taste, I have to be honest and admit it has been 10 years since I've eaten real cheese. I like this. It tastes kind of like processed cheese but not quite, because I always hated processed cheese. I guess it tastes like a mixture of processed and block cheese. It smells cheesy without that nasty dirty gym socks smell of real cheese and all the vegan cheeses I've tried before. This is the first vegan cheese that I have tried and actually wanted to eat again. It was also good straight out of the bag. Overall, I'm very impressed. It has been so long since cheese has been an option for me that I no longer crave it. That in itself will be the biggest thing that will keep me from eating it frequently. I'm pleasantly surprised. I do wish it came in a resealable package though, and the price is a bit high (almost $6).
I was lit-rally shocked to see Daiya at our grocery store today. At first, they only had the FYH monterey, then started carrying Tofutti slices, and today I found both kinds of Daiya! Crazy. I'm not going to buy it often at all, but still such a surprise to see it! 3.99 for the shreds package.
Holy Crap! Daiya at my HFS was almost six bucks!
My little HFS is now selling daiya in bulk! She bought the 5 lb bags and can divie it up however you like. We got a half a pound each yesterday. yay!
