Just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and basically have to avoid soy foods like the plague does anyone have any suggestions on how I can be vegetarian with this? I've just started to make some chinese dishes like fried rice and lo mein with soy sauce are there any good alternatives to this?
Here's an "allergic to soy" thread:

Here's a soy sauce substitute. I've never tried it, so I can't attest to it's tastiness:

Double check with your doctor about how strictly to avoid soy. It's true that soyfoods in excess, as well as cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc) in excess fight against thyroid - but I've never heard of a strict exclusion for this. Soy sauce has only a very small amount of soy - since a recipe usually uses so little.
On the other hand, sea veggies (aka seaweed) are good for your thyroid! 8)
I personally think that vegemite tastes like super concentrated soy sauce - I'd try just watering it down a bit and using it, if it has no other problem ingredients.
