tummy bug question
any body got any recommendations for a wife who is not sick (yet) with a hubbie who is down for the count?
It's a nasty tummy bug that's floating around here. I'm fine so far, but am eagerly looking for suggestions other than:
1) wash your hands often (thanks mom)
2) "you're screwed" (my friend the GI doc)
something along the lines of "lots of vitamin Q" or whatever.
I wish i could help. I'm an emetophobic and hearing about a stomach virus going around is like hearing the plague's in town. I take alot of vitamin C, like 2-3 833mg tablets a day around the time i hear of it until it looks like it has passed. I hope everything's ok.
Boost your immune system, my dear. Lots of veggies and fruits (not hard, right?), echinacea (in a tincture if you can get it) and a glass of fresh lemon juice every morning (sqeeze half a lemon into half a glass of water--no sweetner allowed! Juice must be from a fresh lemon, not bottled). Don't forget to drink lots of water. Good luck! I hope hubby feels better soon.
Double on the watter and vitamin C. Also one of my friends swears by raw garlic smashed up and swallowed with a little olive oil. This might only work by keeping the sick husband away :)
Knock on wood I haven't been sick in a few years.
I second the ginger tea. It really helps settle the stomach and is soothing on the throat. Ginger lemon tea is even better.
I had gotten a sample of the airborne stuff in the mail and I don't remember what it was, but something unvegan was in there. . . moreover-I think it's been proven to be worthless.
Something you could try is Acidophilus. This does a range of great things, enhances immunity, supresses bad bacteria, strengthens the good stuff, helps balance the digestive system and is great for 'bowel type' bugs (hoping you dont get to that stage)LOL.
I believe you can get a dairy free version. I am in Australia so I cant help you with brand names, however maybe the web site nutrasanus.com can help.

Myself, it helps if i try to keep my food bland and as simple as poss. I hear raw is good for tummy bugs too!
If you're talking the standard automatic-eject tummy bug, I would recommend lots of fluids, no solid food for 24 hrs to starve the little microbes. My mother cured everything with room-temp 7Up and cranberry juice for vitamins (served separately!) The less you eat that has food value the quicker the little bugs give up the ghost. Lots of rest and avoid the shopping channels, they'll make you sick without any help. ;D
My apologies mdvegan, I wasn't getting down on alternative meds, but I really haven't seen any good reviews. Apparently it comes in a different form now than it did, so these little pills may be vegan, but the children's form does contain honey.
Not posting this as an advocate, but here's a bit of Mike Shermer's encounter with it. . .
In one final lunge at product verisimilitude (dang it, that zesty taste feels like it works), I consulted Harriet Hall, a retired U.S. Air Force flight surgeon and family physician who studies alternative medicine. Hall looked up Airborne's ingredients in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database and found no evidence that any of the ingredients prevents colds. Worse, vitamin A is unsafe in doses greater than 10,000 units a day, and Airborne contains 5,000 units per tablet and recommends five pills a day or more. The only positive finding was for vitamin C, for which some evidence indicates that taking high doses may shorten the duration of cold symptoms by one to one and a half days in some patients. But the large amounts needed may cause side effects. "There's more evidence for chicken soup than for Airborne," Hall told me.
Even though you "cared enough to share", knowing you're in Maryland, I still relate you as being the vegweb local doc (that's your official position here, just as Idioglossia is our official hemp advocate). I see the mdvegan and think back to your parents being who they are and just see you as that. (your opinion is greatly respected here). I am all for any alternative to the mainstream health field, keep at it. . . I'm sure the soapbox won't get too dusty. ;)
I met with an acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner and she recommended that I take Quercitin and Vitamin C to boost my immune system (I was getting sick at least once a month). I bought the Quercitin at my local health food store and it's vegetarian friendly; I take 800 mg 3xday. She recommended that I take 2000mg of Vitamin C 2 or 3xday (it's a high dosage and may "clean you out" a bit, but it's healthy to do for a short period of time).
I work at a unversity (and live on campus) and I haven't gotten sick since I started taking them (about 2 1/2 months). Hope that helps!
