Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Thanks ladies--I'm feeling better-- I was just so pissed that it turned out to be not raw--why on earth would they promote a totally unraw product in a raw book?? Grrr--I kinda want to bonk their heads together...I mean look how easy it was for me to pick up the phone and call Nautre's Path--they couldn't do the same thing? WTF!

Anyways--I'm back on track and as soon as I poop out the cooked-ness this will all be a flushed memory *hahaha*  ;D See how I joke?

Wow, Vigilant!  That's great.  You guys are doing so well!

I didn't get to read all this about the Manna bread before I went and bought some, but I did read it before I ate some so now it sits in my freezer.....waiting.  Even though I made no raw commitment, you  guys have so inspired me that I'm seeing how much of the rest of this month I can handle as a raw foodie.

I mixed up those raw "meatballs" yesterday, though because I don't have a food processor I had to make some minor changes.  There was just no way to get the stuff mixed in a blender without adding a little bit of water.  It came out too thin to mound so I added enough ground flax seed to thicken it so that it would.  I also used fresh herbs and fresh garlic.  They kind of look like little turds!  I took a picture I'll post here once I drag my daughter out of bed to download onto the computer (I have no idea how to do it).  I just hope they don't taste like little turds!!  :o

Saturday I made raw zucchini spaghetti with marinara and "turds" and you were right Capture, they may look like turds but they don't taste like turds.  They were actually quite good, though it was weird eating "spaghetti" that wasn't at all warm.  Sunday was Greek Salad: no feta or potato salad.  Real Greek salad doesn't have potato salad in it anyway, that's an American thing according to my ex-bf, Dino, and he should know....born and raised in Athens, Greece.  I did put Kalamata olives in it even though I'm not sure if they were raw or not.  I know canned olives are cooked and processed as are most jarred olives, but I don't know about the Kalamata's from the Whole Foods olive bar.  I buy the ones that are in olive oil, not brine, and they still have the stones in them.  I just don't know.  living-foods.com indicates that sun dried, raw olives are available but hard to find.

I think tonight I may make Capture's Mexican salad.  The salad picture from your blog looks so good and I have some raw flax seed crackers from WF that I can pretend are tortilla chips! :)

Yhat sounds awesome Storm! Defintely put some of your bad ass cilantro into your salsa! It will blow your mind! And if you want your food heated up you can set it one the dehydrator for a little while if yours has room--I have one of those giant round ronco's and the top level is big enough to hold a plate--it does take awhile for stuff to warm up though--but like you--I get sick of of eating cold food--it's nice if it's at least luke warm :)

Yeah--olives are hard! If you're getting them from the olive bar your chances are probably a lot higher than if you got them else where --but yeah...who knows?!? Di you try to ask anyone? They probalby don't know anyways...but you never know :)

Great job on your raw transition!

I'm pshyched I only have 14 days left--I am having mean cravings for boca burgers, fries, pizza, burritos...oi! It's brutal--I also torture myself looking at pictures of food and recipes...I don't know why I am so maschostic towards myself!

Great job on your raw transition!

You inspired me!

i think to get raw olives you need to specifically hunt them out - that most you can get (jarred and barred) are cooked. one of the raw books i have talks about olives and says were you can order them. but still, some olives in a raw dish isn't too shabby.

I was afraid of that.  I guess it's not too harsh of a violation.

OK so Ive had some sprouts on the go for a few days, alfalfa, sunflower, chickpea, and lentil.  The alfalfa sprouts turned out great and tasted wonderful, I used the chickpea to make raw hummus and it was really quite good, but not as good as the store bought brand I like, but the sunflower sprouts were HORRIBLE, they are bitter and taste a bit like sunflower seeds, but awfully bitter-are these an aquired taste? I could barely  choke them down in a roll-up last night.  What can I do with the rest of them?  I think the chickens are going to get them becouse I don't think I can stand to eat them again unless someone has any suggestions.  My Lentils didn't do anything and Im going to try these again.

Hmmmm, I have sunflower sprouts and I don't find them bitter at all.  I'd be curious to hear what someone else thinks of them.  Maybe my taste buds are just a bit different than yours.  I often hear people say that rapini is bitter, but I don't think so.

I hope your chickens appreciate the treat!

I'm better now.  I blame it on the lady at my office who brought in 2 boxes of Einstein's bagels for her team and then put the leftovers in the break room for anyone who wanted one......I wanted one!!  I managed to resist, but all I've thought about all day is bread.  I eyeballed the sourdough when I was at the grocery store, but managed to walk out with only Boston bibb lettuce, portobellas, yellow squash, and zucchini.

eta: Capture, those burgers look so good...and lucky me, I have all the ingredients I need to make some!  I kind of feel like a big copy cat because I keep checking your blog to see what you ate and then making the same things!

I feel your pain Storm *boy do I ever...* After the race on Sunday everyone was feasting on giant bagles with cream cheese and other baked goodies while I was powering down nanners....I think the only thing that prevented me from eating a bagle was knowing it probably had eggs in it..but I really wanted one too...

I really just want to eat like a huge loaf of bread for my first "cooked" meal in september--but I know i can't do that...I'll probably just end up with rice and veggies to safly transition back to the heated side...

So, this is what my faux raw un-meat balls looked like......
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii85/Stormflakes/VegWeb/PICT0052.jpg

....a tray full of turds.  But they were good!

Last night I had lettuce wraps with chopped veggies, sprouts, avacado, and a few "squirts" of Braggs.  Braggs has been a God(dess) send since it's about the only raw condiment I can have without making them myself.

I also made a batch of sun-dried tomato and flax seed crackers.  Those came out really well.  I used a different recipe than my previous one and I like the new one better.

Oh! Storm! Your stuff looks good! I need to make some different flax crackers--I really like the onion ones I made--but they are really high in fat...why are there no fat free nuts or seeds out there?? Oh well...

And please--Storm, keep copying my food! That's why I post them!!!  :-* you're so silly and I loves ya!!

capture, have you tried experimenting with adding veggies to the flax crackers? you can prob add quite a bit before  they won't stay together. tomatos, squash, greens would all taste good. i've been wanting to try messing with these, but i'm out of flax and too lazy to go to the store.

i made a nice raw dinner last night. will post pics when i get them on the computer

I've only made the onion-flax crackers--they are great, but the cal/fat count freaks me out--I think thre's over 200 cals in one small serving, I get a little funny about cal expinditures like that--always saving my cals...

I really like the carrot-pecan burgers I made--those did have a bunch of veggies in them and they are super low cal--only 80 clas per! With th lettuce, onion and tomatoe I can have a "burger" for 100 cals! woot! I'm going to make another batch of them!
